I don't think the firmware uses a filesystem, I tried finding a .sdat file in the raw binary as well as a converted firmware.nds file in Tinke. How would I go about ripping sounds from the firmware? Is it known what sound library it uses?

There are means of converting the firmware to a NDS file. Could run that in an emulator with loop back recording if you wanted, maybe dropping channels if you care more about button press noises than background or vice versa.

The official DS firmware is a nightmare tangle of several types of compression (far from plain old SDAT in this one). Chishm's fwunpack could be a jumping off point if you did want to get files/data streams to look at rather than loop options.
