PSN ID change feature entering beta, publicly available in 2019

If you've been waiting for the opportunity to change your Playstation Network ID, you can rejoice. Sony announced today on the PlayStation blog that they will soon begin testing the long-awaited ID change feature. Initially, it is only going to be available to Sony's 'Playstation Preview Program', but the feature is planned to be rolled out for everyone in the new year.

Your first ID change will be free of charge, allowing you to erase any embarrassing usernames you may still have. Subsequent changes will cost £7.99/$9.99, or £3.99/$4.99 if you have PlayStation Plus. Additionally, you will have the option to display your old ID so that friends can become accustomed to the change. This cannot be changed after setting it, so your old ID be forever stained onto your profile if choose to do so. If there is any issue after changing your ID, it can be reverted free of charge.

I like mine. DarthFace235 is my PSN, and I don't plan on changing it anytime soon.

But I can see why some would want to change theirs. Being stuck with a horrible name for years, unable to delete it because they'd lose all their purchases and trophies.

"However, please note not all games and applications for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita systems are guaranteed to support the online ID change, and users may occasionally encounter issues or errors in certain games."

You convinced me  Maybe I don't care that much because I don't really play online and I've been using the same nicknames for like 14 years (I'm a creature of habits)
Same but with OCD. I wanna change my current PSN nickname from Yepi_69 to Yepi69, the reason it has the underscore its because I already had an account with my original nickname that I created back in the PSP days, I asked Sony to delete it so I don't know if I can change it to that nickname considering that its a deleted account.

Why people are so excited about this feature seriously?
It's best you just dont ask a question like that since you probably picked out your PSN ID that you're comfortable with. After 8 years of my experience with PSN, I've grown old to realize my main account's ID needs a change and so does everyone who have grown old as well. We all need IDs with less X's in our name. XxSN1P3RxX is like the worst name anyone can have. Just giving it to any "real life friends" (if you have any) can be annoying

Well when the system wasnt built to do that... You have to redo a lot or have to try to fit it in and MAKE it work. Ive hated xbox since I could remember. Even though the name change thing was something I wanted for so long, I didnt want to touch that VCR shaped thing.... But now that sony is adding it in, I am super excited!
Hey biff I added you on psn I wanted to ask you something or pm me on here

The original article also states this big caveat, which makes this a rather disappointing half-assed attempt. Hopefully these issues get resolved, as I look forward to being able to change mine, as I've had the same account since 2009. :)

This feature is compatible with PS4 games originally published after April 1, 2018, and a large majority of the most-played PS4 games that were released before this date. However, please note not all games and applications for PS4, PS3 and PS Vita systems are guaranteed to support the online ID change, and users may occasionally encounter issues or errors in certain games. If for any reason you experience issues after changing your ID, you can revert back to your original ID for free at any time (you will only be able to revert once during the preview program). Reverting back to an old ID will resolve most issues caused by the ID change. In addition, when this feature officially launches, a list of compatible games published before April 1, 2018, will be provided on PlayStation.com for reference before you make a change./

This is pretty messed up, yes databases cost money, but $2 would be more then enough, and they'd make a profit.... I guess maybe they were never set up for database changes, so they are recouping infrastructure redevelopment fees.

That means old games might need API changes (requireing a update). Which depending on the age of the game, might not happen.

Finally people can stop whining like bitches over this minor, minor issue.
Eh it depends on the name if it's a minor issue....

And if the concern is that "well we can't trust the government to intervene for this because the government can't do anything right and wastes tons of money" then holy shit push for a better government. I'm certainly trying to. Don't throw your hands up and go "we've tried nothing and we're all out of ideas"

@K3Nv2 that's crazily expensive. how long will that take to pay off?

Although diet is largely education, people don't need to go to university to learn what's healthy and what's not,
it's the whole country, big corporations and advertising that is to blame for leading most of the population to believe that poptarts and froot loops are healthy to feed a child
  • mthrnite @ mthrnite:
i would think the population knows better but with food deserts and abject poverty, sometimes a poptart gonna have to do.

As someone who went through the grade school system in the US some time within the past 30 or so years, not nearly enough is done to promote and educate on how to eat healthy in a way that is feasible to do on a regular basis and also affordable. Eating healthy is, comparatively, fucking expensive. So is eating unhealthy, but in many cases eating unhealthy is more affordable than eating healthy

@Sicklyboy I agree, but also it's about self control and realistic thinking. We wouldn't feed a dog soda, so why feed it to ourselves? Eating unhealthy food because it's cheap is one thing, but I'm sure you know people who drink soda routinely when they should be drinking water which is free.
I get it can feel mean to say "no treat sweet beverage for you anymore" but for many people it's just in their way of life.
