you know how the ds had the nintendo wi-fi connecting thingy where you plug into the pc? is there a thing like that for ps3?

That's just a USB WiFi dongle with software to configure ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) for you. Honestly, the Ninty WiFi dongle was the same.

You can use any of the following to get internet on your PS3: ethernet cable (either from the router or from a computer/laptop with WiFi ICS), PowerLine ethernet (through the electrics), PowerLine WiFi, wireless repeater/range extender, wireless network hub, wireless router/modem, USB WiFi (via a computer with ICS), PCI WiFi (ICS), 3G WiFi AP (using a smartphone or similar device).

Basically just connect your PS3 via ethernet or WiFi to a device that already has internet access. If that device is a computer, enable ICS.

To set up your PS3 WiFi connection you will need high-speed Internet access, a DSL or cable modem and a wireless router.
