I don't see why this is "news." Sony and Microsoft have always lost money with each console sold. They rely on software. That's the only way Nintendo can survive as ONLY a game company. MS and Sony are GIANTS in the realm of consumer electronics, so they can afford to lose money on the hardware. They've done this with every home console they've sold.

Yes this exactly, also the wii was profitable from day one simply because controls aside, there was zero innovation in the hardware. And its not like the wii's controllers come cheap.

This is a non story really.

One of the main reasons Sony ditched the "George Foreman" build of the PS3 and went with the new "Slim" was to cut back on manufacturing costs.
Duh.

My thoughts exactly.

I hate Nintendo's attitude towards their customers. This is especially true with the hinge AND shoulder button problem on the DSLite and DSi (only shoulder buttons). I called Nintendo and the secretary said the DS would have snapped the first time I opened it if it were a true hinge problem; otherwise, the customer did it. That's bullshit.

Kotaku is wrong. A more reputable source claims they are losing $108 per system.

This is nothing new for Sony. This has always been their strategy, even with the PS1 and PS2. We all know it worked out well for them in the past.

this seems more logical, sony aren't selling it to the distributors at 299 a system you know.

yea but im sure whoever does this math is only thinking of how much $ it takes to build one ps3, things cost drastically less when buying in bulk, meaning that when ordering parts for manufacturing, they cost a lot less when buying in millions then it does when buying one

Please tell me what innovation was involved in the creation of the 360. I'm truly interested in knowing what is deemed "innovation" from Microsoft, but is thought of as lazy from Nintendo. "OMFGHDISTEHFUTOR!!!!"

The cost of the PS3 slim here in the Philippines is US$400 so I dont care about Sony's lost. They should take the extra VAT here in the Philippines because my country is full of bastards and full of fucking idiots.

Sony should also consider their profits abroad (Philippines) where they can finally rise.

PS: Goodbye Philippines, Hello Canada

It also costs 400$ USD here

Fun Fact: A PS3 Slim here as in Lebanon will set you back 400$, but a 360 Elite will set you back 500-520 $

LOL?

apparently looks like they are losing money but remember... this is sony (Strategy On New Yields) which means tht they thoughtfully take every action hence as long as the products (HW) are sold, the SW will definitely make the difference (no wonder ppl wanna become software programmers rather than hardware)

and still they're losing money, good for them that they can buffer the losses with the profit they are making in other business areas:. bad strategy, but i won't bet that they are gonna learn from that experience

For the last time, so many people think Sony is just losing money because the PS3 costs more to make than its sold. Software sales fill that gap. Unless you purely buy a PS3 and no games (which is a pretty retard thing to do), Sony isn't going to lose money.

And what do you have against Sony? They've made great consoles. The PSX had tons of great games (Chrono Cross, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Final Fantasy, etc etc). The PS2 had even more great games (God of War, Twisted Metal, Kingdom Hearts, Jak, Ratchet and Clank, etc etc). The PS3 has a crop of pretty good games (Uncharted, LittleBigPlanet, GTA, etc).

Seriously guys, what's your problem?
