My friend has this Japanese Slim PS2 unit which is unmodified.

Is it possible to be able to softmod this unit to run ISOs or Burned DVDs without using any original media?

The only thing I have is a Japanese PS2 FAT, which has a matrix modchip and runs ISOs through a hard drive using a network card. (I bought it already modified like this a few years ago.)

There's hope for a Xenosaga port.

I think you can do this hack using the memory card and later load games through USB, but they run sluggish as hell.

Look for FreeMcBoot. And I think it doesn't work on every SLIM model.

Yep. I edited my original post. I think you can prepare the memcard on you modded PS2 avoiding the need of the swap magic disk, but I am not sure.

EDIT: FreeMcBoot would allow you to run homebrew, then you will need the PS2 USB Iso Launcher, I don't even remember the name but it shouldn't be hard to find.
