Thanks mastermanna123..nice Grand Theft Auto on iPhone ; D..but i am sure a Wii processor is stronger than an iPhone right?

Point taken Trolly, at least this guy is giving it a go. Even if he fails to port PSX to Wii, at least he tried

The iPhone has a 600MHz ARM processor (or PPC..not sure)

sure he did, "his" emulators are initially GP2X ports of famous emulators (snes9x, gpSP, picodrive from Notaz, psx4all from chui and himself)
this work because both machines are based on a ARM processor and a lot of emulator cores already have been rewritten in ARM asm for performance

but the wii architecture is a lot different and the port will not be as easy as the previous ones... My opinion is that he should probably work in team with tehpola/emukiddid .. his knowledge about psx4all (which is based on pcsx code also, with some compatibility improvment) and their knowledge about the wii/gc hardware should make the things easier

a lot of devs already have expressed their will to port pcsx (or derivative work) on the gamecube and now and the wii, nobody have done anything yet ... why ? because this is not as easy as porting an oldschool emulator, because you can't just re-use the original emulator code and need a major rewrite if you want to achieve decent speed, something that not quite any emulator porters can do

uhm, no. a modchip can't magically add an extra laser to read cds.
the wii uses a dvd laser ONLY.

Actually, the lens is sensitive to 650nm, while CDs are 780nm.

Thus, all DVD drives can read CDs. It's just a matter of software support. If the firmware doesn't support it, software can be written to support it.


Though, the more logical step would be to enable the emulator to read ISOs and load 8 games on one DVD.

Wouldn't MP3 via USB/SD be more practical in this day and age?
 
I used to know a good site that converted all of the SPC audio to MP3.

How about those are the wavelengths of light the laser uses?

It goes on to explain that standard multi-read drives are equipped with separate lasers for CD and DVD (780nm and 650nm respectively). The Wii is only equipped with a 650nm laser as far as anyone knows, so it's not likely that any reliable CD reading can be feasibly done.

What's more, the sector layouts for CD an DVD discs differ (MODE1/MODE2), and this interpretation is usually done in drive firmware. (For a well known example of this, Wii discs use an entirely different sector layout and can only be read by drives which allow RAW disc data reading, like LG drives) Since there is no 780nm laser on the Wii, it's not likely that the firmware contains functions for reading MODE2 sector data, although it is possible. If there was no firmware support, the two choices would be a modified firmware and mod chip incjected code. Since the firmware is currently stored in a ROM on the disc drives, a custom firmware would not be possible. Mod chips injecting code might be possible, but at this point they only send a few basic commands... I've heard that the debug port interface is hardly enough to actively patch data, and I doubt the drive allows any sort of code-adding feature.

So, sorry, CD-ROM is looking pretty much impossible for the Wii.... Unless the 780nm laser magically appears.
 
On the contrary, there is an algorithm in which the same 650nm laser can be used on 780nm pits. The disc is spun at twice the speed it would usually run at and each pit is read twice from two focal points.

It was introduced primarily to store more data on a CD-R than is feasible with a normal CD-RW drives.

The practicality of this algorithm is slim to none, with the advent of inexpensive multi-format DVDROM drives and DVD-Rs.


Like I said before, DVDs with an emulator that supports ISO is the best solution.

A moderator would've told him the same thing, considering the day he posted this thread, he also had 5 other threads on first page.

That's because nobody responded to his other threads, other than to tell him to stop posting so many.

They disappeared quickly. Had they not, people probably would've gotten more annoyed.

im sure theres a reason Nintendo chose to do this

it wasnt designed with the idea of all-in-one media player like the other two systems out there

and why would someone want something so simple anyways? you have a computer to play CDs on
