Poll: ZuneHD or iPod Touch?

The Zune was destined to be a colossal failure right from the start. I was one of the people saying that it would flop and that Microsoft would abandon it after a couple of years because the iPod has such dominance over the portable audio player market, but people just said I was trolling. Funny how it all turns out, and I was right in the end. The Zune was a failure in every way possible, sales were falling within the first two years of it's existence.

I think the next true step in making competition for the iPod Touch and Classic would be to make something with Android OS but with more open source capabilities and not having so many restrictions on software not to mention firmware updates that can completely brick your device or prevent it from functioning. The biggest complaint I have as an iPod Touch user is that when iOS 4 came out, it has really ruined the battery life on my 3rd gen Touch, and the 4th gen has a better battery to compensate for the new operating system. I think ultimately the Android OS will be the true competitor of the Apple brand. RIM has no interest in competing in the digital audio market, they are more into the business side of things and Apple really doesn't have any true competitor for the iPod Touch and Classic in terms of developer support for applications and stuff, while the iPad and a lot of the iPhone applications are also available on Blackberry and/or Android OS.

My thoughts EXACTLY. If Android firmware was available on hardware that WASN'T a phone, it would cut down Apple's userbase by a ton.

Android firmware is still based completely on phones; if you hack things to run Android (like a Nook Color) it'll still have to have the options for phone and SMS.

As much as I dislike any Apple products with a passion, I have to vote iPod Touch here.
Zune is discontinued and just had way too little support to ever be a real competitor of the iPod Touch.

It had no support because it was a terrible product that came out FAR too long after the first generation Touch did. Basically, if you aren't the first company to do something completely new in the digital electronics market, you have already lost the race. I don't like a lot of Apple's ethics as a company but at the same time, much of what they have done with the portable devices has come out pretty damn well. Apple did a lot right with their first generation of products and then every other company has tried mimicking them and failed doing it. The Zune was a failure because Apple took risks some 11 years ago when the first iPod's came out and provided mass storage audio players and people gobbled them up because there was a demand due to the quickly growing digital era of computers. 11 years is how far behind Microsoft and any other company who has tried to come out and make a competitor to the iPod. Brand loyalty and the fact that some competitors products were just poorly designed and not of the same quality or lacked the user friendly factor that the iPod has always had, are reasons why so many have failed where Apple has succeeded and that is a great way to do business. The risk takers get the biggest rewards. Do you think the New York Yankees would be one of the baseball teams if George Steinbrenner had not personally gone into debt in order to get his team competitive by spending money to sign big name players? He was a smart guy and took that risk and drew in crowds by the thousands, a few years of losing some money and his team was back on top of the big leagues and making huge profits. When you are a winner, you draw in the crowds, it's economics.

I have a Zune 30GB for my music and movies, but I think a Zune HD is kinda a waste of money. The stuff you can do and the fun you can have with the iPod touch is really awesome.

Seriously, people get such boners over iPod apps and honestly, I don't see it. I mean I own an iPod Touch and the amount of apps I use isn't that much, and most of those apps are on other platforms (I have my Android phone now for the social networking stuff, Youtube, whatever). I really don't use my iPod at all unless it's playing music, and as a music player, I'd go with something else.

My friend has a Zune and he's really pleased with it and from what I've played with it, it's nice.

Really though, if you're after something just to crank out some tunes, maybe an older iPod or a Sanza Fuze would be better. I'm pretty pissy with these modern PMDs (personal media devices or whatever you want to call them) and their shitty storage space. If I want a decent size amount of space on an iPod Touch or an iPhone I have to pay an arm and a leg for a 64GB model, which doesn't even have as much storage space as the medium-sized older iPods (my older iPod before the Touch was an 80GB one). That's why really I'm leaning towards ditching my iPod Touch and going with something with expandable storage like a Fuze or even a PSP Go (well, mainly since I've wanted a Go for a while and the 16GB internal storage sure beats the 2GB and 4GB memory sticks for my PSP currently).

Zune HD is still shitty because it still requires the Zune Program, which I find to be mediocre. At least iPod Touch lets you use different programs for putting music on and not just their own iTunes.

Quite honestly, if you're looking for a solid music player, why bother spending over 100? Get a Sansa Clip+ with a micro sd and be done with it. You get rockbox, and a decent amount of storage.

I chose other cause I have been using my archos 604 for years now with no problems at all. And no silly stupid software needed to sync music on it with whats on my computer, you just plug it in and the computer sees it as a removable hard drive so you just drag your music and movies to the right folder and good to go. Only thing some ppl don't like is you have to buy and additional plugin to view movies with ac3 and HD stuff but that's no biggy for me.

ZuneHD, I have it and a ipod touch 4g, the Zune is by the far the better Media Player. plus the zune battery lasts longer then the ipod I have noticed. Zune software > itunes.

Fine, take away the apps and iTunes still has a far better music and video store selection, cause ya know, the record companies actually support it.
