Hi Tempers. Its been a minute.

October of '24, a few friends and I were discussing what we were doing that weekend. I expressed that I had a wedding to attend and wouldn't be around. Them, knowing I am a Nintendo enthusiast, joked that I should take my 3DS and be as obnoxious as possible, taking pictures all night. We all laughed and I agreed to do it.

What started as a joke became a real hobby.

The pictures are terrible. Low quality, grainy, and only a horrendous digital zoom for distance. And yet. I was hooked. It took me to May until it finally clicked. I was at a cousin-in-law's birthday party for her son. There were people there I hadn't seen for years, and it made me contemplative. When we got home and I was looking though my pictures it finally all fell into place. Social media images taken on the iPhone 45 (or whatever Apple is on now) with a 89b billion megapixel lens and 16 cameras are genuinely incredible. The amount of detail those pics capture is stunning, no doubt. But its not how I remember that day. An iPhone image is too perfect. Every pixel in place. Just the right amount of light. The perfect focal length. If I wanted to know the brand of wine on the counter, I can zoom in until I can see the pixels that make up the label on the very bottle. But I don't remember the brand of wine. I don't remember the light being perfect in the dark restaurant ballroom. Looking at the grainy, overexposed 3D shots on my 3DS? That is how I remember the day. Too much bright light coming from the windows. Poor overhead lighting. I have pictures of people I can't make out. And you know what? It's probably because I don't know who they are. There are no touch ups, there is no post processing. With a 3DS, you point, you shoot, and you get what you get. And that is my whole thesis: The 3DS camera takes apologetically brutal and honest pictures.

So I started taking my OG 3DS with me everywhere. The comments I get are pretty funny.
"What kind of phone is that???" "Is that a DS???" "Are you really taking pictures on a 3DS?" "What are you playing? Taking pictures???"
Everyone loves it. They want to see pics of themselves and other stuff I've shot. They all try the 3D effect going "oooohh aaahhhhhh" It's delightful. So fun fact while we are here, posed pictures just don't work with the 3DS. It destroys the charm or suspension of standards or something. I can't figure that one out. But candids are where the 3DS shines the brightest. Landscapes are Ok depending on the composition. Sadly the best way to view the images is obviously on the 3DS screen. Some of the majicks is lost translating to a .JPG but its the best I can do. I tried converting the .MPOs into 3D .GIFs for viewing on a 2D display. The effect was there, but the end result was just too nausiating to be worth doing.

Anyways, I hope you enjoy the album I have put together for your viewing.

Oh yeah there is a HUGE amount of nostalgia attached to the process too. The images, the restrictive image controls, the transferring of images via SD card the PC...

I have to ask, is a 5 leaf clover more lucky than a 4 leaf one?
I am not sure. I am pretty lucky so possibly.

It was a huge flex though. My brother was looking for one and I just bend down and grabbed a 5 leafer without trying haha

I have something similar with my current phone (Light Phone 3). It's got no zoom or anything fancy, just position it and then use the shutter button. Just feels like a nicer experience than a normal phone.

Edit:
I'll add a nice pic of my own from this phone last year to contribute.

A lot of this kind of thing going around lately. People going back to older simpler hardware because it makes photos fun again. Lomography is back, baby!
Next Bortz will start posting barn raising videos, I can see it now

Reason why cameras from the 2000's have a certain vibe with people; the compression artifacts and chromatic aberration sets the theme nicely.

It must be possible to convert the 3D images to a format that works on people's fancy pantsy VR headsets or whatever. Or those shitty ones you put a phone into.

Probably a lot of people here still have a 3DS kicking about too, I know I do.

Or without additional hardware, there's that thing where you put the two images side by side, then either cross or "uncross" your eyes to see them combined in 3D.

Hi Dave! Yeah I think all of those things are correct, I just wish the barrier to entry was lower. I can't imagine someone REALLY wants to convert someone else's 3DS photos for viewing on a VR head set. But it is possible.

If you import the (.MPO) along with its (.JPG) using Adobe Photoshop, the two layers will be combined as both blue and red into one to simulate a 3D effect. That is the closest to a 3D image you will get; you'll need 3D glasses, of course.

I enjoyed your post but for me personally, I can't use the 3DS camera for pretty much anything, let alone important events like weddings.

When I take pictures I like to obtain more information than I remembered (ideally), and at the best quality I can practically carry, even if I am just messing around. I see no point limiting myself to an extremely low-cost gimmicky afterthought of a camera (a favourite for Nintendo's accountants), let alone a camera without a xenon flash.

For candids, the 3DS might also draw more attention to itself than desired.

I completely understand where you are coming from. Something that freed me from your way of thinking was when someone explained that there will always be a photographer at weddings. Anyone can take a "good" picture of the Grand Canyon. But he wanted to see a blurry picture at the statue of Liberty. And then I started to find the art in 3DS pictures.

the other thing is, we all have 5000 photos we took, but we never look at them

the 3ds photos have probably been looked at more than all the photos I took this year combined

I wish I hadn't killed my 3DS (what a fragile thing, amateur repairs not recommended). I loved using it as a 3D camera, even briefly recording an event for the lols.

Is it a usable camera? No, not even remotely. Is it fun making use of stereoscopy? Absolutely!

At this point, I am hoping to somehow repair it or replace the whole effected board, if not get another unit (selling existing one for parts)... It's not only the camera, but also the step counter I loved using
