In theory, could it be possible to convert a save from the original Pokemon Red Gameboy cartridge and patch it onto the virtual console game on the 3DS?

I want to bring my Gen I Pokemon to the newer games.

I've asked this. Dump your real game with a regular DS. Rename the dumped save to save.dat, should be a .bin or .sav., then inject it with JKs Savemanager. This also works with saves from emulators so you can just rebuild your team with cheats in an emulator and rename and inject.

You can't play a Gameboy cartridge on the DS.

I see your point. This would only apply to flash cards. You may need to order a USB adapter to rip it or rebuild them in an emulator.
