Gaming Pokemon heart gold question...

I have pokemon heart gold on my r4 and the press Y for cheats shows up but when i push Y the screen goes blank i think its cause i have the wrong game id since its a patched version of heart gold so is there a patched version of heart gold game id? how can i get the cheats to work?

What R4? What firmware? Why using a patched version of the game?
