I've been using a pirated disc of Vista for a year now. Never had much problem but then again, I never bothered pushing the laptop's ability.

I will certainly not say xp64 has anything resembling good support (although it does have marginally better "old" hardware support vs the buy a new printer vista thing even if I do say so myself) and for day to day xp32 is the way forward.

Linux: I am no linux zealot (my usual policy is along the lines of servers and gparted: excellent, "hacking"/fixing windows: good although bartpe also is good, everything else: think long and hard unless you only do the basics or are willing to spend time) but some of the more recent stuff is fairly foolproof (alas my goto distro of linux mint (they said screw licenses/patents we want to do stuff) lacks a 64 bit version last time I checked and there were no real plans from a cursory search).

@offtopic84 that may be the case but until it hits it is another one of the "look what might happen" pile (and so far nothing has yet to set the world alight). I do like STALKER though so here is me hoping we do not have a retread of deus ex 2.
Also September (OK 29th of August) is 4 months away (leaving aside my wait for the patches and mods principle) and we all know what happens to hardware, prices, software and drivers every "quarter".

It's not what I call a long process. Total format re install takes me 40 minutes.
Fortunately I have a purpose built Corporate edition with the SPs and the updates all built in.

Juts debating whether SP3 is worth the time to rebuild the OS disc to have that built in too.

Westside, you said you have 4GB of RAM, that's EXACTLY the reason why I migrated from Vista 32-bit to Vista 64-bit (still pirated though). While its not the perfect system, at least it recognizes all the nice little goodies I put inside my new computer and Crysis runs better on it. One thing though, I'm not sure but the iPhone DOES NOT work on Vista 64-bit.

I don't have an iPhone but I thought it would be somethign you'd like to know.

Process is not long but backup up the stuff to an external HDD is.

The OEM activation Vista version works well for me and my friends' PCs, which are custom PCs. Even SP1 updates without a hitch.

At this point I am thinking of buying Vista. They sell the retail version of Ultimate for $150 online. I think maybe by SP2 Vista will get better. I really wanted a mainstream OS (currently XP as it still domiates 73 to 74 percent of the market) that will run well on the system. I guess we'll wait for the next windows. I was hoping Microsoft will see this as a another repeat of what happened with Windows ME.

OEMs are very different from retail. They are tied to the motherboard it is first installed on. Unlike the retail versions of Windows which can be transferred to a new computer, OEM versions are not transferable. No tech support, and it is either x86 or x64.

I have been using a Vista Ultimate x64 OEM disk I grabbed from thepiratebay for about a month now, the only fiddling I've done is turn off User Account Controls because they are annoying.

I'm not sure if I have SP1 or not, I haven't made any special effort to get it so if it's not in the automatic updates I don't yet have it.

By SP2 I expect the buzz to have switched to Windows 7.

By 2009-10 I fully expect all of you that have bought into Vista to feel like an atheist in hell.
