Permanently disable Windows 10 updates?

How can I disable Windows 10 updates completely? I have a old PC (Phenom X3 with the infamous ASRock AM2NF3-VSTA board and nVidia 7800GT so it can't even install graphics drivers) which I only use for CD/DVD burning using P-ATA drives. So I don't want it to update, it will make it slow and it's frustrating that it need reboots while I just want to shutdown after burning a disc.

I already disabled the "Windows Update" service and deleted C:\WIndows10Upgrade. But somehow today it managed to re-download it and install a new build of Windows 10 and halfway even destroying the GRUB bootloader too (it's a dual-boot with Linux), rendering the whole system unbootable

The GRUB is fixed now, the system is usable again. And I see the "Windows Update" service is turned back on automatically

How can I really turn off Windows 10 updates, without pulling the network connectivity?

There used to be a time when you just had a option to disables updates in the Control Panel, but that's not the case anymore in Windows 10

I didn't know the Windows Firewall can block domains (I use Linux as daily), I'll take a look Maybe even the hosts-file can be used for this?

I found this domain list for Windows Update. I hope it's enough.

Build a custom Windows 10 ISO using MSMG Toolkit, removing the Windows Updates package.

Warning: Doing this WILL break a lot of shit, most importantly, the Windows Store. Be careful of what you remove.

You could set your network connection as a "metered connection" and then tell Windows Update not to update over a metered connection. This is probably the best and easiest way if you aren't regularly changing your network connection on the computer.

Alternatively, you could just wait for Windows 10's end of life on October 14, 2025.

People should be using this GUI to manage the built in Windows firewall. Been using it for years with the Medium filtering profile, create only outbound rules (can copy the rule and set to allow in if necessary), and notifications set to Display so you get a popup when anything tries to connect.
