do. not. update. just because we can run code with a Webkit exploit does not mean they're not patching firmware and kernel in 2.1+ to remove privilege escalation opportunities

NWPlayer123 is correct, Nintendo may have patched certain vulns that exist in 2.1 that may not exist in 2.2 and 2.3, and vice versa. As of right now, we can run arbitrary code with elevated privileges. Ram sections can be read and overwritten, which means we can put a pointer to a section of ram that we've overwritten with future jailbreak code. This was only attainable on 2.0 ... but hardly anybody has 2.0. Now we have the same capability on 2.3 which means that the first piece of the puzzle is attained and for a much bigger audience. Stay on 2.1 and 2.2 if you wish, but at the end, I'm pretty sure the golden fw will be 2.3. 2.0 Switches are a sliver of the market back then because the console was unattainable.

Will the game carts have update partitions like 3DS ones do?

No games yet have come with any updates. I think at most, Nintendo will require the switch be on a certain firmware version in order to play the game ... but make you go online to get the update. The console is very young still so we will see.

when you start a game it will ask you to update the software. if you click update it does not update the game software (like you could think it would).. instead it just updates the firmware. I guess a lot of people don't understand that.

Thanks for replying, so if I switch off the automatic updates and am on flight mode would I be able to play a game without updating the fw?

yeah, i guess so.
my console never updated itself automatically. (i even use WiFi actively!)

if you want to be super safe and you dont need Internet at all just set up a DNS (that blocks updates) or a proxy (that does not exists... so you cant connect at all)

the only thing that might be problematic: if the console found an update before you entered flightmode.. i m not sure if it acts as shitty as the 3ds and always nags about updating. so be careful when starting a game ^^

Thanks for the advice, I'm on 2.3 at the moment (just got the switch and updated yesterday) and have been playing Mariokart online. So if there is an update it would ask me to update before loading the game? Are you unable to load the game if you don't update? Sorry for the noob questions!

no there s a nag with 3 options
1. start software
2. update
3. cancel

so you always are safe if you dont click wrong i guess. at least it is like that on 2.1.

i updated yesterday to 2.3 so i cant screenshot it sadly

i had it on german - in german it does not say System Update as far as i remember

but in english its quite obvious:

So you just select 'start software' and it'll play the game? Thanks!

yes, exactly.
Just press start software and it will go smoothly into the game.

but better be safe than sorry. I m not sure if nintendo changed it on 2.3! that nag was there in 2.1 - not sure about 2.2. i went straight from 2.1 to 2.3.

I dont think they changed it but you never know for sure.

if you want to block future firmware updates (only does firmware, game updates and eShop and etc still work fine afaik), just go into internet settings, edit your connection, change DNS to manual, and set both to 173.255.238.217
Hi, is it really as simple as that? I can do it all the switch as you advise? Cheers.
