Hardware Nvidia GPU not detected on Windows 10

I have an ASUS X555LB laptop with two GPUs: an integrated Intel one and a dedicated Nvidia one (GeForce 940M). I've reinstalled Windows 10 recently, and the system isn't detecting the Nvidia card very well. It shows up in Device Manager as Other Devices > 3D Video Controller, and when I click on it to see the details, it reads ‘The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There are no compatible drivers for this device.’ If I try to install the drivers through GeForce Experience, it tells me it's unable to download the recommended driver. If I download it separately, the installer says it could not find compatible hardware. Does anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for the tip. I've noticed there are Windows 8.1 drivers, so I've tried installing those, but got the same error.
Though, I know there must be a way, since I've used Windows 10 on this computer before and everything worked fine...

Oh, this driver was the first result on Google when I looked up my card.

That is very sad to hear...

...but unfortunately common....maybe you remember the NForce NVIDIA Mainboards/Chipsets...

If they did not have one,NVIDIA Drivers does not help/work....
Maybe you can try a Mail to the ASUS Support.
Maybe a Mainboard "Component" is not correcty installed under Windows 10 / is missing (a PCI Bridge for Example)
It worked before,because you mabye had a lower Windows 10 Build before ?

What version of Windows 10 are you using (you can check by running Winver, you can simply type it in the search box on the start menu or using Win+R to run it)? That error makes no sense unless you're running like...stock Windows 10 from 5 years ago.

If you're running some super old build, you should probably update to latest, or at the very least like 1909.

there's one way that's semi-automatic and there's a way to do it completely manually.

What you'll want to do then is open device manager > display adapters > <your nvidia thing>
or in your case Other Devices > 3D Video Controller apparently, which already is on the odd side of things.

Now what you're going to wanto do do is in that screen go to drivers > update driver
And then you can try from there to search automatically

If that doesn't work, then make sure you have the nvidia thing unpacked somewhere (probably c:/nvidia)
choose browse my computer for drivers, navigate to c:/nvidia and include subfolders

if THAT does not work, your last option would be "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
and that's where it gets "tricky", you have to be absolutely sure you pick the correct driver.
You can click "have disk" and then go into c:/nvidia and whatever subfolders it has and choose from .inf files there
Just make sure you pick the one for the 940M then.

Either that or do that process with the driver you can get off the asus support site

Okay, so apparently, between two restarts, the registry got corrupted and the keyboard and mouse stopped working, so I'm reinstalling Windows at the moment. If the issue isn't resolved after this, I'll try this solution.

Because there are no longer NVIDIA 32 bit Drivers....

Huh...that's interesting. Can't say I've ever seen the registry just "corrupt" like that, may want to check the health if your HDD/SSD just in case, sounds like something may be dying.

Hey could you do to:
Control Panel
Device Manager
Display Adapters (if you have it recognised ad 940mx) or 3D Video Controller if thats what it has shown up as
Right click the device, select properties
Go to the details tab
Drop down the property box to 'Hardware ID'
And share the info from that tab

There may be a mismatch in device ID that is not registered in the Nvidia Drivers. I can have a look at adding it to the Nvidia installation to get it to detect your device, if that is the issue. It is the same way people install latest drivers for unsupported hardware. For example I have added the Hardware ID for one of my latops that has a now unsupported 870m, that now runs that latest drivers 456.71

Okay sweet good news. Next take this file and put it in Display.Driver folder and replace the exisiting one and try the setup again and let me know how you go.

If you get the same don't worry. Ironically I just did this with my sytem today so I hit these same hurdles and made success out of it.
