I have an ASUS X555LB laptop with two GPUs: an integrated Intel one and a dedicated Nvidia one (GeForce 940M). I've reinstalled Windows 10 recently, and the system isn't detecting the Nvidia card very well. It shows up in Device Manager as Other Devices > 3D Video Controller, and when I click on it to see the details, it reads ‘The drivers for this device are not installed. (Code 28) There are no compatible drivers for this device.’ If I try to install the drivers through GeForce Experience, it tells me it's unable to download the recommended driver. If I download it separately, the installer says it could not find compatible hardware. Does anyone have any ideas?

From the NVIDIA Driver Page:

GeForce 900M Series (Notebooks)
GeForce GTX 980, GeForce GTX 980M, GeForce GTX 970M, GeForce GTX 965M, GeForce GTX 960M, GeForce GTX 950M, GeForce 945M, GeForce 940MX, GeForce 930MX, GeForce 920MX, GeForce 940M, GeForce 930M, GeForce 920M, GeForce 910M

You maybe need the OEM/Notebook´s Manufacturer Driver.....

As part of the NVIDIA Notebook Driver Program, this is a reference driver that can be installed on supported NVIDIA notebook GPUs. However, please note that your notebook original equipment manufacturer (OEM) provides certified drivers for your specific notebook on their website. NVIDIA recommends that you check with your notebook OEM about recommended software updates for your notebook. OEMs may not provide technical support for issues that arise from the use of this driver.

Good Luck.:)

EDIT:

There are unfortunately no Windows 10 Drivers for your Notebook NVIDIA Graphics:

Thanks for the tip. I've noticed there are Windows 8.1 drivers, so I've tried installing those, but got the same error.
Though, I know there must be a way, since I've used Windows 10 on this computer before and everything worked fine...

Is there any particular reason you're trying to install old ass drivers?
Oh, this driver was the first result on Google when I looked up my card.
https://www.nvidia.com/Download/driverResults.aspx/165685/en-us < This is the latest, 456.71, whereas the one in your screenshot is 352.84, and the latest does still support your 940m so it should install fine.
Sadly, I get the same error (plus an additional one) on the newest version.

upload_2020-10-27_9-56-24.png

Also, I tried installing the Win8.1 driver from ASUS's site manually from Device Manager, which got the card to show up under Display adaptors with the correct name, but it doesn't work. (‘Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)’)
Trying to run the installer again with this setup bears the same results.

That is very sad to hear...

...but unfortunately common....maybe you remember the NForce NVIDIA Mainboards/Chipsets...

As mentioned above:

If they did not have one,NVIDIA Drivers does not help/work....
Maybe you can try a Mail to the ASUS Support.
Maybe a Mainboard "Component" is not correcty installed under Windows 10 / is missing (a PCI Bridge for Example)
It worked before, because you mabye had a lower Windows 10 Build before ?:(

Thank you.:)

What version of Windows 10 are you using (you can check by running Winver, you can simply type it in the search box on the start menu or using Win+R to run it)? That error makes no sense unless you're running like...stock Windows 10 from 5 years ago.

If you're running some super old build, you should probably update to latest, or at the very least like 1909.

Can also always try to "manually" install the driver through device manager.
there's one way that's semi-automatic and there's a way to do it completely manually.

What you'll want to do then is open device manager > display adapters > <your nvidia thing>
or in your case Other Devices > 3D Video Controller apparently, which already is on the odd side of things.

Now what you're going to wanto do do is in that screen go to drivers > update driver
And then you can try from there to search automatically

If that doesn't work, then make sure you have the nvidia thing unpacked somewhere (probably c:/nvidia)
choose browse my computer for drivers, navigate to c:/nvidia and include subfolders

if THAT does not work, your last option would be "Let me pick from a list of available drivers on my computer"
and that's where it gets "tricky", you have to be absolutely sure you pick the correct driver.
You can click "have disk" and then go into c:/nvidia and whatever subfolders it has and choose from .inf files there
Just make sure you pick the one for the 940M then.

Either that or do that process with the driver you can get off the asus support site

I'm running build 19042.608, which is the latest version, according to Windows Update.

I've tried this with both the driver on ASUS's site and the latest official Nvidia driver, but both of them have the same result.
After a restart, the card shows up properly as Display adaptors > NVIDIA GeForce 940M, but it has an error symbol on it and the device status says ‘Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)’

Odd, have you tried using DDU to get rid of everything from NVidia? you'll have to do that in safe mode.
basically where i'm going without writing it all out would be:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforc...p-windows-10-how-i-solved-the-code-43-error-/
sounds like something is corrupt somewhere but it's difficult to pinpoint what exactly.

Okay, so apparently, between two restarts, the registry got corrupted and the keyboard and mouse stopped working, so I'm reinstalling Windows at the moment. If the issue isn't resolved after this, I'll try this solution.
@smileyhead

Are you using the x32 or 64x bit Version of Windows 10 please ? :)
Because there are no longer NVIDIA 32 bit Drivers....:(
Not to worry, my Windows is 64-bit.

Huh...that's interesting. Can't say I've ever seen the registry just "corrupt" like that, may want to check the health if your HDD/SSD just in case, sounds like something may be dying.
I just switched from an HDD to a brand-new SSD, actually.

Sorry for the delay, I was busy yesterday.

Sadly, using DDU didn't help, either.
I'll try out every 940M driver now (because for some Godforsaken reason, there are multiple entries per card, all with the same name, when I install it in device manager), see if that works.

EDIT: I counted: there are 16 entries for the 940M. Looking forward to all these restarts.

Hey could you do to:
Control Panel
Device Manager
Display Adapters (if you have it recognised ad 940mx) or 3D Video Controller if thats what it has shown up as
Right click the device, select properties
Go to the details tab
Drop down the property box to 'Hardware ID'
And share the info from that tab

There may be a mismatch in device ID that is not registered in the Nvidia Drivers. I can have a look at adding it to the Nvidia installation to get it to detect your device, if that is the issue. It is the same way people install latest drivers for unsupported hardware. For example I have added the Hardware ID for one of my latops that has a now unsupported 870m, that now runs that latest drivers 456.71

Okay, I got these results:
  • Entries 1, 3-5, 7, 10-11, and 13-16:
    • After install, the card shows up in device manager as NVIDIA GeForce 940M and reports no problems.
    • Trying to launch the installer yields the same errors as before. (‘The NVIDIA graphics driver is not compatible with this version of Windows. The graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.’)
    • After a restart, the card still shows up in device manager under the proper name, but reports errors. (‘Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)’)
  • Entry 2:
    • After install, the card shows up in device manager as NVIDIA GeForce 940M and reports no problems.
    • Windows installs NVIDIA Control Panel automatically. When launched, the software doesn't open. (Note: after having finished checking all 16 drivers, I've reinstalled this one to try something, and Windows didn't install this the second time.)
(Code 43)’)
  • Entries 6, 8-9, and 12:
    • After install, the card shows up in device manager as NVIDIA GeForce 940M, but reports errors. (‘Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)’)
    • Trying to launch the installer yields the same errors as before. (‘The NVIDIA graphics driver is not compatible with this version of Windows. The graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware.’)

The hardware IDs are the following:
Okay awesome thanks for the info.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/xuuc2sc0ayw1c4k/Nvidia+456.71+940m.zip/file

So I've modified the latest Nvidia drivers (456.71) to include your Hardware ID.
Yours is:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1347&SUBSYS_236A1043

And the only ones in refernce to the 940m in the driver setup info are:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1347&SUBSYS_50031558
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1347&SUBSYS_65041558
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1347&SUBSYS_65071558
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_1347&SUBSYS_65081558

So by adding your specific Hardware ID to the setup it should hopefully detect your device and get you past the screen that says nothing compatible is found. It should install.

Download the link, run the nvidia setup after extraction and let me know how you go. If you do run into issues let me know because it is still potentially not the end I will just have to re-work a few things.

Let me know how you go.

Okay sweet good news. Next take this file and put it in Display.Driver folder and replace the exisiting one and try the setup again and let me know how you go.

http://www.mediafire.com/file/iyji9z9gqeuvvz9/nvcvi.inf/file

If you get the same don't worry. Ironically I just did this with my sytem today so I hit these same hurdles and made success out of it.

The new file I have added a new line just to see if it helps.

So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.
