NPD sales data shows top 10 best selling exclusive games since 1995, all are Nintendo games

3849-1-1.jpg

The NPD Group has been tracking United States video game sales data since 1995, offering decades of sales history to look back upon. Analyst and employee of The NPD Group, Mat Piscatella, has trawled through the available records in order to create a definitive list of best selling games, with previous lists including what titles shifted the most copies on PlayStation Vita, Xbox One, and PlayStation 4. This time, Piscatella has revealed the best selling console exclusive video game titles since 1995--not including ones that were bundled with hardware--and the results show overwhelming domination by a single company: Nintendo. Every entry on the list belongs to a Nintendo system, ranging from the Wii to the Nintendo 64. The top ten are as follows.

10. Wii Sports Resort
9. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
8. Super Mario 64
7. Mario Kart DS
6. New Super Mario Bros.
5. New Super Mario Bros. Wii
4. Wii Fit Plus
3. Mario Kart Wii
2. Wii Play
1. Wii Fit

Taking the lead, perhaps surprisingly, is Wii Fit, and the top 5 are solely comprised of Nintendo Wii games. The most recent release from there is New Super Mario Bros. Wii, which hit store shelves on November 11, 2009. NPD does not track digital sales data, however none of the above games were available in a digital format at the time of release.

Marketing can be such a pain, huh?
It can, though it is not as painful as releasing a system that is both simultaneously underpowered and hard to code for, with abysmal online and not ensuring you have people willing to make things for it.

Bluetooth... Ir sensor... Dolphin... Not anymore complicated than syncing it to a Wii...

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Not a valid response... "I can emulate it" is the laziest retort to so much in this forum. It's disgusting.
my desktop has no bluetooth. 1 adapter i have to buy. I don't have an ir sensor for my desktop. another gadget i need. I'm sure you need software to emulate the controls and set it up. Much more complicated than my already setup wiiu/vwii with hdd/haxchi etc...

Greetings!

May I introduce myself: I am the inventor of the game "Menu Guesser DX EXTREME CHAMPIONSHIP" that came shipped with every WII sold. You randomly press buttons on the controller without looking on the screen, then you guess what menu is shown. You might say its garbage but thats the most sold game ever since it even shipped with the WIIs that were not bundled with WII fit. Yes and Nintendo used my clever design without paying royalties. Thats how they deal with indie devolopers... So all I have is fame.
the list excludes bundled games...

and no wiifit wasnt bundled wii sports was.

I routinely see bluetooth dongles of suitable capabilities (it is not like you are transmitting high bandwidth media streams with the things) in dollar/pound stores, you might as well complain about having to buy a USB A-B cable for your printer or something.

While the IR can be replicated with a couple of candles that would be a slightly specialist thing, one you can probably find in some high street shops and game shops (or at least could, not sure about the current state of affairs).

Have not played with current wii controller scripts but years ago it was on par with standard OS joystick setups where you set up a dead zone if you wanted it to be.

go find the cheapest bluetooth dongle and you are done with that, not even drivers needed as they use the generic ones already included with you os of choice.
as fast pointed out a pair of candles do the job just fine, but if you want something more professional there are usb sensor bars that sell for as much as the bluetooth dongle. I've even seen sensor bars with integrated bluetooth, pretty convenient.
once you have both those things you can pair your wiimote via dolphin and everything works as well as original hardware, no complications at all.

You can emulate all consoles one generation later, Sony included. You still lose out on one of the biggest draws when you emulate portables and hybrids, though.
gamecube, wii, wii u and switch have all been emulatable while still being current.
you are right about portables and all that, but that's besides the point.

So there are some interesting sides to this,

This is a bit obvious, but notice there's no Gamecube games, which I believe still sold more units than the N64(?).

Super Mario 64 is there even if it's what a lot of people got bundled with their N64 (at least all my friends did back in the day).

And I have yet to play Wii Play...

i wonder how would that be possible humm ?
is it because parents would find the wii the best solution price wise since it included a game already ?
upload_2018-11-21_2-11-51.png

also i do not know how the hell are they coming up with these top tens, it sold 22mils, where there are games that exceeded this, it lands 14th on vgchartz ? wrong records online ?

I'm not sure why everyone is so surprised. I know so many older couples who bought a Wii and Wii Fit not just for themselves but because it was a "game" they would encourage their family (kids, grand kids, etc) to join in and it'd be a family activity. It's a wholesome "game" as well, and many families who were only okay with board game video games got it as well. It probably has the widest demographic to appeal to, or at the very least the widest demographic with disposable income.

i'm really skeptical about this list and quite frankly don't believe it. Halo 3 as an example was the best selling game in 2007 in the US alone and has sold around 15 million copies alone. I just even found out by comparing super smash brothers brawl that that game even sold less then Halo 3 so how is that list accurate ? So nope, the list is def not correct and wrong

Also they're claiming they don't do bundled games but allmost every game on that list came bundled with the system as you can see when looking up the bundles

I'm surprised that Mario Kart DS sold more than Dr Kawashima's Brain Training on the NDS.
...anyway, this list of Nintendo pack-in games (which I don't fully trust btw, as it omits most of the SNES's various pack-ins) may shed some light as to why the biggest Gamecube titles didn't feature on this list.
That list isn't accurate seeing the amazon link i showed above clearly shows games on the list being bundled with the console itself while the list claims those games weren't bundled

What you've linked is a Euro list. I believe the list I've linked is a mishmash of regions (although it's definitely missing a lot of Euro pack ins)... and as the subject of the OP states NA console exclusives, a list of Euro pack-ins is redundant.

American list, clearly shows mario kart, wii sports resorts, new super mario bros and so forth so nope their list is still wrong because they claim no bundles but here you can clearly see bundles being sold in the US packed together with games on the list

The Mario Kart one isn't a console bundle - it's a console being sold with the MK bundle (game + steering wheel), ie. not a pack-in.
Plus, that list is items currently for sale, so is predominantly pre-owned/used items and not new retail bundles.

Isn't it tho ;) New or used doesn't matter.
NPD group clearly states no bundles, it doesn't say anything about new or old. If you go to the amazon listing it clearly shows New super mario bros in a bundle while it is on the list plus wii sport resorts plus mario kart
