Hacking noob question - wii key version?

Got a wiikey installed in my wii. How do I know what version it is?

Also, how do I update it to latest version?

Simple as that. Boot wii normally and just select from disk channel?

there is a chance if you use the wrong firmware. You need to be very sure you have a Wiikey and not a Wiikey 2. They have different firmwares.

The configuration loads from the disc channel. The firmware upgrade starts (if required) as soon as you turn on your system so you need to power off (or perhaps reset... I'm not sure because mine apparantly came with the latest firmware)
