Oh sorry, I guess I'll refrain from answering any questions since I'm new to this.

I have a question of my own. I'm going to install the homebrew channel with the Hackmii installer and it says bootmii is not compatible with my SD card on this wiki page I read. This was the SD card I was planning to use because it's my main one becaue it's 2 gigs. However, I have another SD card which I think will work but it's so small that I would use it only to install the homebrew channel. So what I'm asking is that it's only installed once, so I can just install it and then switch to my other SD and still access the homebew channel?

You should be able to install the homebrew channel and bootmii fine with any SD card, but bootmii itself might not load with certain sd cards after installing it. It will still install fine, but you would have to copy the bootmii folder to a compatible sd card to get it to load. So if your 2 gig one isn't totally compatible and your other one is, but isn't at least 1 GB. What you could do is just install everything with your main 2 GB card, then if bootmii doesn't load from that card, copy the bootmii folder written to it onto your smaller compatible card and load it from that one, then go to the NAND backup icon (4th icon on first page then first icon on next one) and then after going to that screen I believe you could swap the SD card with your 2 GB one and have it just write the nand.bin to that card and verify it (DON'T SKIP IT) and then back up the nand.bin file to your pc from that 2GB card. Then you can just continue to use your 2 GB card as usual.

Also note that if your Wii is a boot2v3 or boot2v4 Wii (a Wii bought sometime after mid 2008ish) you will not be able to install bootmii to boot2 on your Wii at all, which is the important version, so you can only install it as an IOS, which doesn't really provide any brick protection in itself. The hackmii installer will tell you if you can or can't install bootmii as boot2. The first screen will either say "bootmii: Can be installed." or "bootmii: Can only be installed as one variant." or something along those lines. If it's the one variant one then you don't really NEED to bother with bootmii anyways and can just use your 2GB for everything else.

my guide is basically the same as the youtube vid, only with an offline part

Thanks, I followed your guide and it worked pretty well. I downgraded IOS15, then used TBR to restore the trucha bug to IOS36. I then installed rev14 with no errors. Then I restored IOS15.

I then ran CIOSCorp 3.2 installer...which didn't complain about rev7 not being installed anymore. However...when I got a few IOSs in, I got three errors on WADs and it quit. I don't have the exact numbers in front of me...but the IOS numbers were in the high 50s, with the third being IOS60 (I think). The errors were:

ERROR (ret = -1)
ERROR (ret = -1017)
ERROR (ret = -1017)

Any idea what might be causing this? I'm so close!

EDIT: Think I've decided to revert to my NAND backup, and start the process all over again, except this time go with Neo Gamma rather than the CIOSCorp clusterfuck.

hi,i have a qn.
i am on 3.2u wii and would like to install custom themes.
i understand that i need bootmii or preloader installed before doing anything.
what i would like to ask is i have patchmii installed, will it affect anything?
& which one(bootmii or preloader) is safer?

I got my wii in 2007 so it should be fine. Alright, I installed everything but I'm a little confused in the bootmii part. I selected install as boot 2 and I'm pretty sure it said successful. However, should I have pressed prepare SD card instead? What does that do? I'm guessing they only way to get back to that screen on bannerbomb is to run it again, right? Or is there another way to run bootmii? I want to do the NAND back up before doing anything else on my wii. Oh and this was all done on my 2 GB card.

Even after bootmii is installed on boot2, it requires a 'bootmii' folder on an SD card in order to load. That is what the 'prepare SD card' option is for (if I remember correctly). You should be able to launch the hackmii installer again, and have it prepare your SD card.

bootmii installed to boot2 with a NAND backup is the safest most robust brick protection you can get. If you can't do a boot2 install of bootmii on your Wii, preloader is the next best thing. They should not have any effect on anything else, but preloader will not survive any sort of system menu update while bootmii will.

By installing it to bootmii it should automatically have done what "prepare an SD card" would have done anyways. If you see a bootmii folder with 3 files in it on your sd card then you are fine and don't need to do that. Most of bootmii is pretty much all on your SD card in that folder, The only thing really installed on your Wii is a small thing on 2 blocks of NAND in the boot2 sector that looks for that bootmii folder on your card and loads it. If you turn on your Wii without the sd card in it and it flashes once then like 3 more times really fast after that, then it should be installed to boot2 properly. If it is, then as long as you have the bootmii folder on your sd card, the bootmii menu should come up when you boot your Wii. If it doesn't that means your SD card isn't compatible so you need to either try formatting the card with the sd formatter tool in the downloads section here somewhere I think, and then just put the bootmii folder on it and try again, and if that doesn't work, copy the bootmii folder onto a card that IS compatible and boot your wii with that in and it should come up. Then when you go to the NAND backup option it should allow you to swap the SD card before it actually starts if that card doesn't have enough space on it.

Hello,
I would write all the crap about being very new to this hacking and stuff but i know you won't want to read that.

I have a wii that is running on recently updated firmware 4.1E.
I have installed hombrew using the SD card method
I tried to downgrade it to 3.2 to optmize it for homebrew
However i could install nothing
I tried multiple downgrade methods but kept recieving the error code "-2011" and "-1017"
So i tried just jumping straight to installing a backup launcher but this also recieved the same error codes when i tried to
Install it
It became obvious i couldn't open any WAD files without recieving these errors
After searching the internet i found the Trucha Bug Restorer and realised that was the problem (probably)
I downloaded the TBR and copied it to SD card (TBR was the only thing on it) however when i put it on my wii when i
opened HBC it showed nothing
1. Should i be using the TBR?
2. If so how do i run it?
3. If somebody helps me to get it working what back-up launcher is best?
Sorry if i am making a very stupid mistake or are doing it completely wrong.
Thank you very much for reading this and thanks in advance for any advice or guidance i recieve.
Thanks again,
Craig

1. Yes

2. There will be a file that has a .dol extension. Rename it to boot.dol and place it in a folder called SD:\apps\tbr (SD will be your drive letter), then run this from HBC. This is the only thing you need to downgrade, don't downgrade your system menu/firmware version, there is no need to change it.

I'd suggest following this guide:
http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=171901
(You don't need to manually download and pack the WAD files if you have a wifi connection)

3. NeoGamma R7 is the best.

You do need to use the Trucha Bug Restorer, but after you do you do not need to downgrade to 3.2. As a matter of fact, if your Wii is a boot2v4 Wii, doing so will brick it. 3.2 isn't really better for homebrew anymore. Anything can be done on any firmware now and with 4.0/4.1 you get the additional benefits of bug fixes and the sd card menu and sdhc support. So basically don't downgrade.

Moving on, to run the Trucha Bug Restorer (this is how you will run any app you get actually) from the download of it you got there should be some file that is a .dol type of file. Rename this file to boot.dol and put it in a folder called Trucha Bug Restorer (for any other app you would do the same thing and just put it in a folder named whatever the app is) Then put that folder in a folder called "apps" which should be on the root of your sd card so the file path should look like SD:\apps\Trucha Bug Restorer\boot.dol

This is how you get applications to show up in the HBC for any of your apps. Your apps folder should just have different folders in it for each different application you want to show up in the HBC. If there is a meta.xml and icon.png that comes with the .dol file of the application, put it in the same folder as the boot.dol and it will look cleaner and more readable in the HBC.

So anyways, you need to run the Trucha Bug Restorer, and then first select IOS36 or just press b for no IOS reload (it doesn't really matter for the first step) Then wait for the next prompt and when it gets to a list of options, go to downgrade IOS15 and select download from NUS whenever it lets you choose between that and loading files from your SD card or usb storage. (only if you have wifi, if not you will have to get the necessary IOS wad's it needs and put them on your SD card first.) Then it will restart automatically and you have to run it again from the HBC. This time on the first screen select IOS15 and press A. Then go to the IOS36 menu, there make sure the IOS slot is set to IOS36 and select yes for patch hash check and ES_Identify. Then click install patched IOS36 and download from NUS as before. Then after that's done it will restart again, so run it again and select IOS36 this time and then restore IOS15 and download from NUS again.

Here is a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltrd3oq8hPc...re=channel_page
Follow it just as it does that.

After doing that you will need to get the cIOS rev14 installer (google waninkoko's blog and you should find it there.) Then rename that and put it in the proper folder to run it through the HBC like you did for the TBR just change the folder name to like cIOS installer or something. Then run that through the HBC and at the first prompt, select IOS36 and then do a network installation instead of a wad installation.

Once you do that you should be set to use any backup launchers and such. For disc based backup loading use NeoGamma R6 or R7 and for usb loading you can use whatever one you like best. USB Loader GX and Beardface's Coverflow Loader are good ones.

I have a chipped wii and i used the ultimate system menu guide 4.0 (though i did install 4.0.1)
i installed bootmii (as boot2), preloader, and homebrew channel 1.0.3.
It seems that most of my burned backups dont play any more. they load for a second and then they tell me that the disc cant be read. what is going on? they all worked perfectly before the update..

Ok so I copied the bootmii folder to my other SD card and bootmii actually loaded. However, it wouldn't let me do the NAND back up since it was too small and it still doesn't work with my other SD card. Oh well, I'll have to get my friend's or something. Thank you so much nabster, you really helped me!

This may warrant it's own post but to be safe I am posting it here first...

My situation:
System Menu 4.0
Mod chip installed (d2ckey i think its called I did it a long time ago and that mod chip is gone now)
HBC installed

Background:
I have little kings story, I bought the retail copy and was playing it fine without any issues, but I decided I wanted to be able to install WAD files again. So using this site I followed some instructions that allowed me to install WADs on system menu 4 and even run them from the SD card. I think the IOS I had to patch were 35, 60, and 61 (i might be forgetting something -- it was 5am yesterday morning). at any rate using the WAD manager I was able to install and run all the wads I wanted to play.

Problem:
When I put little kings story back in it tries to force an update and comes at me with a warning that it will remove illegal content as well as may stop my wii from working (paraphrased -- dont have my wii infront of me at the moment). I definitely dont want to undo all the stuff I did regarding being able to install WAD files in 4.0.

Question:
Should I follow the upgrade steps in the "ULTIMATE System Menu 4.0 Guide" to update to 4.1? I imagine updating through the game will break all my wad stuff and not let me run the wads I had been playing before?
The strange thing was that when I first played it it didnt have any issue with the homebrew channel being installed.... I guess its not liking the modifications I made last night to let me install WADs. I just havent seen any other threads about this. If at all possible I prefer to launch my retail wii games through the regular game launcher.

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. If I should make a new post for this let me know.

Noob Question. I looked around but didn't find it very quick and I know you guys are all knowing.

My son's Wii is running 3.4U with USB Loader 1.2. I want to update to 4.1 for newer games and get Wii Sports Resort.

What do I need to do and in what order.

Thanks,
Jason

1. How do I uninstall channels that I don't need but don't have the WAD for? I went to data management>channels and not all the ones that show up in the main screen are listed. removing one of my channels caused a core dump and i had to reboot the wii, after that everything was fine. Edit: Nm I found the WADs on my hard drive.

2. Is it ok to remove the SD card while the wii is on, add/remove files from the SD via PC, then put the card back in, or is it better to shut off the wii then modify the contents of SD then turn wii back on?

1 get the wad again and put it back on ur sd card and unistall is the best method

2 I take mine out while wii is on all time so yes it's safe

@ cokesplash u probably installed an older version of those ios. Btw ios 60 patched was the only one u needed. Use dop ios to install latest versions of the ios needed for little kings story

use the ultimate 4.0 guide to upgrade. It has it's on thread search for it

My Wii is 4.1U.
I installed the cIOS38_r14 installer from Waninkoko thru the Wi-Fi method
I'm using the Waninkoko's USB launcher 1.5 and USB Loader GX V.1.0

Problem:
Prior to installing CIOS38 R14 (and perhaps prior to upgrading to 4.0/4.1U), I was using CIOS36 Rev9 and everything was working great. Super Smash Bros. Brawl worked fine. After the CIOS38 upgrade, I now get a code dump -Exception (DSI) Occurred! - when trying to load SSBB. I have the images of the code dump below.

Things I tried:

I did try to revert back to CIOS36 Rev9 and it still code dumps.
I also tried to revert back to sys menu 3.2U... still no luck. I'm back up to 4.1U now.

Any help is appreciated.

Edit: Sorry... uploaded the wrong image... The images below are the code dumps from Coverfloader and Waninkoko's USB Loader 1.5 both using Rev14 in that order. It did code dump with rev 9 too.

UPDATED EDIT: Looks like the ISO got corrupted on my wbfs drive.... had to re-install.... *sigh* anyways... that's something to try if it happens to you.

Thanks!!!

My noobish problem: When I try to store another code into my sd file, it replaces the code that I already had in there. Can anyone help me with this?
