What do I need to be careful of so as to NOT brick my console?
install preloader

Thanks so much for the detailed responses guys.

Do I need to pay attention to the region of the wads that I load?

I just picked up one that is labeled PAL.

Thanks again

Non-region wads will install fine, but won't play. Patch them with FreeTheWads.

QUOTESay, what would a softmod have to do to read backups at 6x?

Softmod has nothing to do with reading backups at 6x. The firmware of the drive somehow determines whether if the disc is original or not.

So, to solve this problem, get a chip

to not brick your wii, you shouldnt mess around with region changing without having appropriate homebrew to save you if you get bricked (such as starfall or better yet softmii with preloader) also, you can get semi-bricked in same cases by installing channels with wrongly dimensioned banners (i think).

I apologize - When you say "region changing" do you mean loading games which are of a different region than my console, or do you mean some other process entirely?

I was poking around for M-Party8 and I could only find a PAL version - Will I be able to load this? The loader I am using I got from HERE.

Sorry for the confusion. I am thankful there is a noob section devoted to these questions.

Since this is a noob paradise, I will answer nicely.

When he says "region changing" think about it. Does the phrase means backup to you? Does it say launching backup? I'd say not.

Region changing is well, changing the region of your Wii!!

And backup loader will load that. Just, make sure that you force video mode to NTSC.

No this isn't a brick, you just change your output signal as PAL and your TV doesn't support it, if you can see what's on screen using the s-video thingy, then use AnyRegion Changer and change to NTSC ans save, then exit, no need to install 3.2, only the video signal output is needed to be changed, ok..?

There are 3 regions for games:

NTSC-J = Japan and Asia
NTSC-U = America
PAL = Europe and Australia

Your console natively only can play your own region games, but some people have managed to change at least the piece of code that makes the console think it is a region supportable, it does not change the game of its ID, only 1 or 2 bytes so the console don't stop the drive from reading, if you are using a launcher, it doesn't matter if it is out of region (not your own region) the launcher will force the game to be readen anyway, make sure to check the compatibility list so you know what problems may find and if some type of patching is needed, if you need some more clarification, make sure to ask here or die in the flames outside this border

Oh thank you master for taking it easy on me.

I only double checked because often times people mis-speak and perhaps use grammar that causes confusion (as you may have done yourself).

Thanks you for the fast response though.

QUOTE(HaniKazmi @ Jan 30 2009, 09:48 AM) all ios's (inless you get special ones) are installed to 247, so they overwrite each other.

Oh, and it was posted straight after this post. ^ ^ Which is why I asked.

That is incorrect, all the cIOS were made to install in 249, but there was a time when we used to install IOS247 for the first launcher and 249 for the beta launcher

what ...?? you didn't see my reply one page later.....??

D:

I made my own health screen, extracted the .wad from the semi-brick fix disc, used Healthii to make the file. Renamed it to xxxxx.health, didn't work with the healthii installer. It installed, and nothing went wrong, but the health screen didn't change after it finished. Then I renamed it to 00000042.app and used Softmii Tweak Tool, and it installed, but also didn't change it. What's wrong here?

Hey there, back again lol.
I and going to use discdumper to make a copy of my zelda game. Once the raw contents are on my computer should I still run the iso through bricblocker or not? I have starfall installed and was a little confused about this. Also, when looking for files for my games on tpb or demonoid, im finding some files that arent the full 4,669,776 or whatever its supposed to be, will these games be okay to play? and should these games be ran through brickblocker?

If you are using a launcher, don't use brickblocker, only if you are using a ModChip or CIOScorp without preloader then you should use it, if a game is not 4.37 GB maybe it is scrubed or compressed, you need to uncompress them first in order to burn them...!!

No, not to my actual post.

Its just that I got confused when I was getting all these ret -#### errors after I updated to 3.4E and then down again to 3.2E. Deleting 254 didn't do anything but then deleting IOS249 fixed everything!. Surprising when it was a cIOS...

Anywayz...

IOS254 is from "N" that is an legit IOS, and if you have not IOS249, you might want to install it, the waninkoko's cIOS36_r7 is the best one, you can also google it as ios249_r7.wad I think...!!!
