Sony did this to the PSP before, and Nintendo with the DSi I believe. Sad!
Nintendo DSi did this for preventing using newer R4 flashcards. like DSTwo, R4 SDHC, R4itt, etc.
Maybe this update updates the Browser for prevent using loadiine.ovh and homebrew launcher.

Can I still play Splatoon online without the update? That's all I care about.

Tbh, and no offence, but this not exactly a priority and online is not important imo. WiiU's are next to nothing to own a second console for just online, if you care about one particular title.

This is a blow to the 5.5.1 users, as there is gonna be bricks with people using cbhc, if they are not careful.

What a sneaky update this is after months of nothing, so just proves that N are still updating a legacy console.

Someone made a guide that allows to play online I think

One way is to spoof the firmware, but WUP installer doesn't work correctly with 5.5.2 downloaded from NUS (results in "not a valid game" error). Until we can properly spoof firmware, not much can be done atm.

Yes but spoofing the firmware is not needed I'm still on 5.5.1 and all my online games are still working and I can still use the eshop using nnu patcher. So doing the Spoof is pointless as the Spoof still needs nnu patcher to access the eshop. Spoofing brings zero benefits.

Maybe it's already fixed, because I didn't read all the new threads.
Is it still an issue ?
Which WUP installer did you use?

Getting the latest "version.bin" title from your correct region, and installing it with WUP should be enough to spoof the version.
Another solution is to use CBHC which spoof to v99

edit:
It's not an issue, he used the wrong WUP installer.

PS : I stickied this thread in the Tutorial section, it's important to know current/old guides are outdated and potentially dangerous until they integrate the new v5.5.2
best protection for now is the DNS filtering option.
