No Online Multiplayer for Pikmin 3

Another vote for "this is good news" ... online multiplayer has its place, but I don't want it screwing up the Pikmin experience. Racing, tennis, fighting .... these kind of quick contests are well suited to anonymous online interaction. But that doesn't mean it should be forced onto every genre, and fortunately it looks like Nintendo gets that.

Yup, the game has online in the form of miiverse and online scores though, which is perfect for the speedrun maniacs out there.
They confirmed this at their presentation and said that it's intended for competitive people.

I really don't understand why Pikmin all of a sudden is "too complex" or whatever to do this when other games aren't. Seriously, what makes Pikmin so amazingly complex compared to other RTSs?

I don't want to be in the middle of an online round of Pikmin to have it ruined by the anonymous 14 year old on the other end getting called to the dinner table.

Why does everyone get the idea that online multiplayer is "forced" on a game and "screws up" the experience? Online multiplayer is just an optional extra feature, and doesn't screw up a game like Pikmin anymore than it "screws up" the campaign and local multiplayer in a game like Halo. If you don't like online multiplayer (like me... I almost never play online with any of my games), then just don't play online. Simple as that. The only time this turns out to be a problem is when the game removes local co-op/matchmaking features in favor of online play *cough*CoD:MW3*cough*

It would be screwing it up since it grabs developers attention away from the main game resulting in either a lacking single player mode or even more delays, it isn't worth it if it doesn't add to the experience.
And in the case of Pikmin, I don't think it's even possible to add online multiplayer unless it's on a PC with a fiber connection.

Following that logic, you might as well say developers shouldn't add ANY extra features to games, because it "takes their attention away from the main game". I mean, c'mon, this is Nintendo we're talking about, not EA... they're not going to mess up the main game at the expense of multiplayer. they're smarter than that. Consider Kid Icarus: Uprising. Some people might disagree, but I say the single player campaign was the main focus of the game, with multiplayer being a secondary feature. And yet, both campaign and multiplayer are amazing. If they can do it with Kid Icarus on a freaking handheld, they can do it on a full console game.

I understand, and I'm not arguing with that. I'm just talking about online gaming in general, not specifically for Pikmin.

I never had the chance to play the first two games. Is pikmin really that good of a series or is Nintendo just milking?

Eh, it's alright. Could be better if they give us more time within the time limits or just get rid of the time limit altogether.

There is a time limit? Time limit kills it. Off to heaven the game goes.
Actually, the time limit is one of the most important features in the series, and it really adds to the strategy involved in it. Pikmin is one of the few games where I'd say a time limit actually makes the game more fun.

Eh, I think the time limit could have at least a little more time... I played the first one, and I could only get through half of a level before having to go back to the ship so my pikmin dont get eaten

The point was so that you wouldn't be able to beat the entire level in one sitting. It was used to see how the player managed not only their pikmin, but also their time, as well as to see how much they valued their pikmin and if they were willing to risk those pikmin to save themselves, and because of the time limit and how much time they gave you I think it illustrated that well.

Your not going by my logic since what I said was that it souldn't be forced just like you said, for let's say a racing game it's only natural that developers spend time working on the online aspect.

I agree with you on liking KI single player more, but the added multiplayer did add to the game after all which is what I'm trying to say, it was worth the added development time.
For Pikmin it would be a waste since it would be a feature only used by those with good connection speeds, and if someone that doesn't have that decides to play he ruins the experience for others.
Just like when playing Street Fighter against people with laggy internet.

True, but you also had the limit of 30 Days, and if you couldn't beat the game before the 30th day, then you get a game over. Some people are good with that. Personally, I was screwed before I ever started the game lol. I Was n the 5-10th day and wasn't even finished with the 2nd place.... I know, I suck lol

But Street Fighter and practically every other modern fighter has online play nowadays.

Also lag is the issue of the player who is lagging, if the other player has a good connection they won't experience the same.

I know Street Fighter and pretty much every other fighter out there has online, I was saying that it's essential to have online for some games.
A fighting game was a bad example, but it would still to some degree ruin the game if one of the players had a crappy connection.
Throwing shells at people with bad internet in Mario Kart is perhaps a better analogy.

Come to think of it Halo Wars has sync issues even with a 25mbp connections. So the whole Wii-U can't play massive online games is mute.

HAHAHAHHAHAH shitty Wii U online can't handle it! HA HA HA HA HA HA
What a piece of junk, honestly. This is embarrassing.

The console should be built around these games. This game is the main title for the console, the one everyone is supposed to buy on launch of the thing.
Why don't they just tweak the specs a bit? This isn't the first time they've whined about limitations, like with crytek when they were seeing if it could run crysis well and it couldn't. It is simply underpowered when the devs have to compromise like this.

If you look at the Playstation's 2008 effort, 'Playstation Home', which was originally made for the PS2, you can see just how pathetic the limited connection thing is.
In Playstation Home, you have a max of 64 seperate people all doing their own animations, chats, wearing different clothes, walking/standing in different places and you have
the bubble machines that each person can place, which animate separately from the players and blow many bubbles that flow naturally in a continuous stream, meanwhile you have video screens on billboards streaming game trailers at decent resolutions and they stream perfectly smooth no matter where you are on the map or what angle you view it on.
There's also other little things like minigames that show people playing them and update leaderboard posters, etc.
Compare that little project to this, and you're laughing. Home wasn't even that big of a deal.

You forgot the fact that PSHome is designed and runs like an MMO game, which does things quite differently from RTS games.

I did not read the last 8 pages.

I would not have thought about this, had the topic and ultimately the decision to not include multiplayer in pikmin stated.
I think it would be fun to play against another player, going head to head to collect more of the pieces of the map before the other player has a chance too. I think that could work. But not without online support obviously.
