Nintendo really needs to add a Master mode to their Pokemon games

Lately I've been playing Pokemon Omega Ruby. I was planning on not touching Pokemon again until the inevitable Diamond and Pearl remakes come out but I saw a bit of ORAS footage on Youtube and the music struck a nostalgic cord.

Even with the shitty 3DS hardware the game looks great and the soundtrack is spot on. It's a lot of fun to explore Hoenn in 3D. But the difficulty really leaves something to be desired. Combusken rapes the shit out of everything.

I played a bit of Pokemon: Ash Grey some years back and that game was a challenge. Not ridiculously hard, just right for those who already are a Pokemon Master.

But we really shouldn't need to resort to romhacks for features that should be in the game to begin with. Zelda games have a Hero Mode. Pokemon games should have a Master Mode. Most people picking up new Pokemon games have already become a Pokemon Master 7 generations in a row.

Not really, a lot of them are kids.
And you'd buy the games anyways even without it.

    Why not a "Champion mode?"

Just play ROM hacks/ game mods. In Black and White 2 they add Challenge Mode (Post game only) and all it did was raise trainer's Pokemon levels. Pokemon is for kids, so do mods, or impose self challenges such as nuzlockes, mono-type, speedrunning, etc.

EDIT: Also battle facilities, they are hard as fuck.

I'm pleased you mentioned battle facilities. The ones from Gen 6 and 7 are no slouches, but I was killing myself in Gen 3 and 4 with the Battle Frontier. Even if it adapted to the current game mechanics, it'd still be torturous. At the same time so much fun, Battle Factory was my favorite, didn't have to breed or get lucky with legendaries, just choose and fight. I recently finished Pearl, and even that wasn't a difficult game, but it was fucking long, I was so underleveled heading to the E4. I resorted to Victory Road training, which took up 10 hours of gametime, I finished the main game at fucking 114 hours! That is ridiculous, I don't remember Diamond and Platinum taking me this long. It's strange, I just got so spoiled with the ease of Gen 6 and 7, how quick things were there, going back was, wow.

But yeah, Pokemon's for kids first, it's only the last few years they gave more of a shit about competitive play. At the end of the day though, it's for kids first, something to just accept. Yeah, there's romhacks too, so, at least there are people with that kind of challenge mindset.

Pokemon games are getting easier and easier at each gen. I always beat any game with just the starter and the legendary pokemon of the game, that's it. Thanks to the mega evos, Pokemon X and Y have to be the easiest games I've ever played.

I played Pokemon Crystal Kaizo a few months ago and I've never had so much fun with a main pokemon game before. The AI wasn't that great but the pokemon levels were high. The Elite Four even had pokemon that went above level 100.

Also lol @ people saying it's a kids' game. I've been playing pokemon since I was 6 and I've always thought they were too easy.

PS I've always felt like playing with the Switch mode as cheating.

The Pokemon meta game is where the challenge is. Look into Pokemon Showdown and Smogon if you want to get into competitive and don't have time to grind, and play the battle facilities from Gen 3-4, as they are more exciting, but in the newer Gens, its just boring normal battles. As I said, the games are easy, just play the meta and impose challenges,

I wish there were more strategy then there is. Yes you have different move types, but I feel it could be a bit more complexed. The newest games kind of went in the wrong direction by outright telling you what moves are effective and which ones arent.

I like that because I can never remember types/type match ups with 821 Pokemon and 17 types (Not including dual types) There is strategy, have you ever seen the meta? And even then, basic type match ups is strategy. Its a game for kids, not people who are looking for hard core strategy games. If you want that play Fire Emblem or similar.

Leave it to you to almost ruin a thread, and I call you out this time because I care more about Pokemon than anything else. Uh, good for you? The basic formula of the main story is hardly ever difficult, but once you go into some of their post-games, and competitive play, that's when it stops being a kid's game, because a kid's not going to withstand that stuff, even now with VGC, they split it into Juniors and Masters.

Eh, I do Showdown sometimes, I just prefer doing it all within the actual consoles. But definitely to practice and cultivate strategies, that and Smogon are most effective.

Who the hell cares about competitive play? Jesus Christ. It's like games would suck according to people like you if it weren't for esports -_-

And yes, there is a different between an easy game and a too easy game. All the Pokemon games can be easily beaten with just one pokemon. That's not how it should be.

*COUGH* *COUGH* *HM SLAVES* *COUGH* And just because a game can be beaten easily, doesn't matter if you can do it in, other fun, and more challenging ways. Most people catch other Pokemon anyway.

I never said the games suck without competitive play, they do add a new dimension, at least for me since I only really learned about it 3 years ago after a 7 year hiatus from active Pokemon play. Before the hiatus, my main jam were the post-games, especially Battle Frontier on Emerald, and when I first played Platinum 3 years ago, I was most excited about their Battle Frontier. So it became more about the post-game, the battle facility, than anything, and competitive play kind of birthed from that. I had no idea about breeding, IVs, EVs, none of that until 2014.

Nope. This is the first Pokemon game I've bought since White. It's a bit late for today but tomorrow when the stores open I'm returning Omega Ruby and getting a refund.

Why don't you just use it as a way to easily get Rutile Ruby? You said you play romhacks, that is a satisfying challenge based one.

    https://gbatemp.net/threads/pokémon...sapphire-or-as-challenge-mode-romhack.400937/

Of course you could be a sneaky pirate and download a cia of OR and use that to install Rutile Ruby, but yeah.

Everyone wants a gen 4 remake but Nintendo doesn't provide. The next game will be a gen 8 game (after the sequels) and we'll see what Nintendo does after that

Wouldn't it have been weird? Gen 1 remake > Gen 2 Remake > Gen 4 Remake > Gen 3 Remake?
