Are you excited for Nintendo Labo? Or is this just another expensive gimmick?

I wonder about that piano one. That seems like the only interesting one that could have applications outside of Labo. Otherwise, this stuff is just gimmicky garbage.

If there's anything I learned from my niece and nephew is that kids will destroy cardboard by mistake or intention very easily. There's a reason why kid toys are made with durable plastics. I hope the "hardware" is easily replacable or at least have an alternate option of not-cardboard.

I'm wondering this myself, maybe they have some sort of replacement program in place?
But if it was me releasing this product, for each copy sold, I will give you 2 replacement cardboard kits via special code of some sort included in the package.
Then supply all retailers with spares, so if you damaged yours, bring your code and redeem your replacements at no cost, any additional replacements for a small fee???
I know my kids will get over exciting and damage these.

They've already said they'll be offering patterns online so you can make your own cardboard replacements. Now how well that's going to work remains to be seen. But yeah that's going to get tedious. I imagine they'll offer pre cut replacements, it only makes sense. If nintendo doesn't do that i'm sure plenty of online shops will.

Edit: they're not offering patterns online apparently.

Oh ok, did not know that, must have missed that info, as for offering patterns online for replacements, yes that would be interesting to see how that one works. I'm sure there's a factory in China is already two steps ahead of us in getting these knock off kits prepared and ready with free shipping :)

Let's be honest it will take 2 minutes for someone to photo and trace the design for others to cut out, probably won't take long for people to design some 3D printable designs for those who want a more durable product or even for proper mass produced plastic alternatives to be churned out by China and sold for a few bucks like the old wii accessories

People are getting a little too concerned about the cardboard nature, I'm certain cheap replacements will pop up almost immediately if not just for the second hand market to exist it would be in GameStop etc interests to get some replacements on the go, if you are so against cardboard just don't buy it till you can get your hands on plastic remakes of them.....although that kinda defeats the point of the game Imo

That is a great point! I had never even considered 3D printing.

now if only Nintendo followed in MS's footsteps and introduce a sandboxed switch dev mode it may have prevented some devs from exploiting it to gain UL but that would be too kind of nintendo after all these are the mofo's who shut down fan games unlike Sega

I still refuse to believe Nintendo can be this stupid.

Having userland access isn't that bad.
Kernel/Trustzone, mostly Trustzone in the switch is what's bad.

No need -- Nintendo already said they'd offer the cardboard schematics for free online if people wanted to supply their own cardboard. You're really only paying for the software ($60), and then a $10-20 premium for the pre-made cardboard cutouts provided. I'm sure they'll sell the software and/or cardboard cutouts separately, too.

If NINTENDO won't offer spares, someone else will. There is business to be had.
