Nintendo JP claims they will not be censoring third party Switch games, as it inhibits the industry

As of late, the gaming industry has gone through a rather topsy-turvy phase, with Sony cracking down by censoring or banning certain themes within video games, while Nintendo, usually thought of as the more "censorship-happy" company, has been allowing games on their platform without removing content. The most recent case of this being Super Neptunia RPG, which had two CG scenes edited in the release on PlayStation 4 as opposed to the Switch version, which was untouched. This topic was brought up during Nintendo's 79th Shareholder's Meeting Q&A, where Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa reiterated Nintendo of Japan's stance on censorship, claiming, "Nintendo, as do third parties and their software, applies for an objective rating from third-party organizations (CERO) prior to release. If platform-holding companies choose arbitrarily, the diversity and fairness in game software would be significantly inhibited. We provide parental controls that can be used to apply limits." (translation courtesy of Censored Gaming.)

Furukawa further added that, "Nintendo, at this time, does not censor, and does not intend to censor", when it comes to third-party releases on the Nintendo Switch. Whether this stance may also apply to Nintendo of America and their localization Threehouse branch, is dubious, with western first-party titles like Xenoblade Chronicles X, Fire Emblem Fates, and Tokyo Mirage Sessions having seen controversial censorship choices in the past. But as it stands, it appears that software from other publishers will remain uncensored, for the time being.

Guess "live long enough and see yourself become the villain" has a secondary thing of "live longer still and you might see it invert".

Anyway despite a few efforts I will still go with I will believe it when I see it. Granted I am still shocked Sony would throw it all away after having it be the reason they were able to rise up so quickly.

Back in the SNES days, releasing censored family friendly games was good business sense. Nintendo avoided the controversies surrounding Mortal Kombat and Night Trap*, keeping a good company image. These days we have age rating systems so mandatory censorship for third party games is silly.

* The sexual content in Night Trap was a bigger issue at the time of release than it is today. Widespread broadband internet and PornHub didn’t exist back then.

I think people are missing a keyword here: Nintendo of JAPAN. Y'know the country that Western publishers tend to censor most of that content from?

I fail to see how this means anything will change in regards to the "Western censorship" that already happens on Nintendo's platform, both first and third party wise.

Glad to see Nintendo is standing strong on censorship these days. Shame the same can't be said for Sony. Guess that's what happens when you invert and become an American company.

Steam was flooded with garbage before they allowed dirty games.

People seem to forget that steam did away with Greenlight and switched to an app store model before they allowed R18 games.

The R18 ban removal really didn't affect much. The only thing that really changed was that there's now R18 shovelware (which nobody will play nor care about), and some big developers like Alicesoft (who makes genuinely good games) are now on Steam.

Aside from that, Nintendo won't be flooded with R18 crap because you can't be CERO Z rated on a home console. It's the law over there.
