We imagine those six multicolored lines you see above are going to cause quite a stir among the various fanboy contingencies -- they represent the percentage of "active users" on different consoles in the first half of 2009, according to survey data compiled by Nielsen. As you can see, the Xbox 360 dominated the charts, while the ubiquitously successful Wii came in dead last by a huge margin, ranking below the PS2, original Xbox and GameCube.

Our initial reaction to this data was that Nielsen is high on pot, but we can kinda understand what caused the Wii's disappointing placement on the list -- the chart is tracking the percent of console owners who use their gaming hardware on a regular basis. Everyone and their dog owns a Wii by this point, but very few actually play them consistently, according to Nielsen's findings. Meanwhile, there's only a handful of GameCubes out there that haven't been converted into lunchboxes, and their owners apparently use them a bit more frequently.

If you're looking for a more straightforward breakdown of console usage, Nielsen also figured the overall usage totals for each console. That chart's posted after the jump. (You'll find it slightly above the deluge of inflammatory comments.)

If you see the images above, Xbox 360 is becoming more popular than a Wii, though.

There are more Xbox 360 owners than the PS3 or Wii, still will never touch another even with an 39 1/2 foot pole, unless some idiot in the US gets me an import 360 for free with Idolmaster. The last 360 I had overheated and started smoking (it was a launch 360).

This is considered news?

This has been known for a very long time now. Ever since the Wii was released there has been some chart or poll stating the same thing.

Your Xbox 360 started to smoke? Then your Xbox 360 is destroyed. You may contact Microsoft to fix your Xbox 360, Hop2089.

Well, there are many video game consoles around the world today, and one video game console could become popular, and will always change one video game console to another over the years. For example, SNES is popular video game console, but later into PlayStaion 1.

It's pretty much too late because it was destroyed by overheating in May of 2008.

I don't see how that makes sense considering it's almost impossible to track active players unless you are monitoring online connections and odds are 90% of Wii owners don't play online but play every day regardless. Also, the data is based on survey studies, it doesn't mean it's accurate, it's just an estimate.

Do you ever contribute anything positive to this community? What you said has nothing to do with what Hadrian said. He talked about console usage and your talking about console life cycles (which by the way, WE ALL KNOW HOW IT WORKS).

On topic: This isn't news as Hadrian said. And if people are wondering why the Wii has twice as less active users, its becasue they're is twice as many consoles on the market. Chances are the Wii and 360 have very close amount of gamers playing actively.

actually hadrian (uranium, nosferadrian etc) this is more of a confirmation than a piece of news... ps3 will pick up as ppl said when it was released and later realised of it's power that it was released too early (it can totally smoke any console and just look how strong psp is considered to the wii - eg. n64 emulator)
