yes but he wiped the SD card so if he is on 2.1 he wont be able to upgrade back to what ever firmware he was on before. This backup is required as part of the guide. If he is on 2.1 additional steps and equipment are required to get backup to a higher version safely.

those were the 2ds files, we need the files that he used before he put the 2ds files on

I'm no expert either, but with all the research I did, I'm 99.99% sure this would work.

Yes but you need to be on ver 4.x to do that.

so he is stuck on 2.0.1 without a sysNAND backup (if it is true that he wiped his 3ds's SD card)

But can't he try to regular update to 4.x? in my experience, this will not make him go from 2.1 to 11.3, instead it should take him to 3.x, then to 4.x. (I could be wrong though)

Regular update? He needs to do a cart update. (Get a game with 4.x and update from that) If he does a regular update he will get to 11.3 and brick.
I don't understand the whole reason why but it has to do with the custom image that was flashed to the NAND during the downgrade process.
Once he gets home at 7:30PM CST the party will continue.
