Homebrew New to the DS Homebrew scene.

Hi all.

I just got DS Lite for an early Christmas gift from my girlfriend. Now as far as DS Homebrew goes, i'm completely clueless on where to start. I have my Wii Softmoded with HBC etc, so i'm not completely new to Homebrew in general. I've searched GBATemp for a beginners tutorial or where to start or what to buy to start making 'back-ups' and using homebrew on my DS.

If anyone could point me to a link with a resourceful tutorial, or point out some tips that'd be a great help.

Do you own a flashcart? That's a start.

Get a DSTT or an R4III or some other flash cart that is good.
after you get the flash cart for your nds, get the DLDI for your specific cart from
http://chishm.drunkencoders.com/DLDI/
use the DLDI to patch .nds files every time you download a new one.
some notable hombrew applications that you definitely need to get are:
Moonshell
DS ORGANISE
DS AIM
DS MAPS
and a lot more.

The good cards should auto-DLDI as far as I know, so you shouldn't need to patch that much. Personally, I'd wouldn't buy an R4 now from anyone. Those cards are all but dead in my opinion. And don't touch an N5 card without a condom. Man that card is skankier than a £5 hooker in Birmingham.

That is a clone. Don't buy the R4, as most R4 sellers out there are just selling bad quality clones.
You should just go with DSTT or Acecard (Low price, like $7-12), and if you wanna pay more, a CycloDS (~$40). M3DS Real and Supercard are worth mentioning too.

I think the CycloDS is ~$50, actually. Worth every penny, though!

I basically downloaded every single homebrew application that looked appealing. My list of tops, so far:
DSOrganize: Memos, notes, music, calendar, IRC and Web Browser; about the most reliable program if you want to type up notes or stories or such (though it has a couple bugs).
Moonshell: I shouldn't have to tell you about this, because it's packaged by default with a few cards and is so popular that you probably know about it already.
DS2Win/Win2DS: The client is very simple (set it to boot at Windows startup [assuming you're using Windows] and it stays in the tray), and it lets you use your computer (a bit slowly) from across the house. A bit hard to use spontaneously unless your computer uses a static IP, though. I've also had troubles getting it to work when both systems are using wireless.
DSReader: Classy-looking, changeable fonts; it's a good application, if you've got sets of ebooks. You can check out DSLibris, as well.
WabbitDS: If you've got a TI-83+ calculator, and its ROM file. I love the idea of carrying around something that, while it emulates something else at double speed, is also quite a bit smaller.
Phidias, Colors!, or UAPaint: There are a lot of painting programs, each with their own features. Colors! has simulated pressure-sensitivity.
NitroTracker: If only so you can record and save eight-second sound clips.
DSMaps: Seems almost useless at first, but you can spend some time, while at home, crawling over several zoom levels of your city. While you're out, you can use the maps you've downloaded to find your way. Half the size of a pocket map, more detailed, and much easier to navigate on!

And as for homebrews...

MoonShell - if you opted for an EDGE card, it's already comes with it
Colors! - the best (in my opinion) painting tool for DS
DSOrganize - the most useful multi-application for the DS, comes with an iRC client, a web browser, file browser, etc...
ComicBookDS - if you want to read manga, comic books, or PDF files (might need conversion)

I actually ended up ordering an edge, and it just came in, but i'm stuck using a 256 mb microSD because my 8gb microsdhc hasn't arrived yet :/
