How does a design like this look?

I'm with PacDan16 on this one. I really like the way it already looks. I also liked the sunshine font because it was easier to read. I'm near-sighted and using a front-lit screen, and have found the new sans-serif font a bit harder to read.

Thanks for the feedback, though don't take this the wrong way, I actually really like this new font, and I kinda don't want to change it.

What do you think of this design for the light theme?

This is a very quick mockup, but I mean something like this? The text area is black now but you can always change it.

I liked these mockups by @Nona_Elexis much better than any of the other suggestions - which still look (subjectively) dated. Playful colour but clean. And those one colour icons - much more modern. Only thing I don't like about this design is the section highlight 'box' outline is messy and unnecessary.

how much can you actually change? maybe instead of having game images display in the corner, have them display in the background entirely, but at something like 10% opacity? as to not saturate the screen

I don't think that is really possible, or it would be more work than it's worth.

I don't dislike the new font, but if it could be a bit larger or bolder so it's a little more visible, I would be fine with it. Also, light or dark I just don't like how similar it looks to the stock kernel. It would help if you brightened up the colors a bit so that way it is easier to see on a non backlit screen. I feel like the new SD card icon looks a bit strange with all the added detail. I think the simpler icon worked better for its size.

I sort of feel like the light theme works better for AGB-001 and AGS-001 consoles, and the dark theme is the better way to go for AGS-101 or the IPS screen.

That's why I use the light theme. It looks ok but is a bit faded on a non backlit screen.

Looks good! The lowercase m's look like blobs though.
Yeah, there isn't much I can do about that, since it isn't a separate kernel option, it's a setting in the extras menu, and I made it draw the font twice, but the second time shifted to the right one pixel.

I'd prefer it non bold then. Just keep the light theme a bit to the brighter side and it should be fine.

Update 3.2:
- Completely redid the UI, so it's cleaner and it looks cool.
- Completely redid some of the icons
- It looks much nicer now
- Added a bold font option for the ASCII text in an attempt help those with nearsightedness.

The light theme and icons are way too dark on a front-lit screen.

I would recommend not playing on a non-backlit screen GBA these days. If you purchased an Omega flashcart, you can surely afford a backlit Gameboy SP model.
