Hacking Need some advice setting up 9.0 N3DS

Really glad you made this thread and asked such specific questions. Managed to learn a lot more than I would have from skimming through a bunch of outdated guides.

Well I tried to get into the matter as far as I could before starting but at this point I am sure many questions will solve themselves once I start on the process. Should get the device maybe tomorrow with some luck, or in two days tops. Then I'll get going and hope I get my rxtools set up.

Any last advice on whether to use an older rxtools like the often recommended 9-28 or 10-02 or should I just pop on the latest nightly? Mind you, I prefer stability over features. Installing cia is enough for me, don't need gba, dsiware and so on.

October release. Has the same stuff as the current nightly i believe.

I personally recommend 9-28 as this is what I use, seems to have everything I'd ever ask of it and it's the one that's been recommended to me.
10-02 one I've seen recommended a few times too, so I guess pick whichever one you like :p if you have trouble with one then try the other.

Okay thanks.

Is it necessary to update sysnand to 9.2 and Emunand to 9.5 or can they just stay on 9.0? Does it make a difference if I use fw spoof?

I'm on n3ds thus 9.5 will be maximum. I don't think I can update to 9.5 via system settings, can I? Wouldn't it just straight pop me to 10.3, which doesn't work on n3ds Emunand?

Not sure. Why on n3ds would you not want to go past 9.5? Point me to where 10.3 wont work with emunand

Because 9.6 encryption keys haven't been cracked.
(Also right now you are trying to help someone when you don't seem to know the subject, just saying.)

That's how I took it. So would updating Emunand with sysupdater to 9.5.0-23e work? Or is there any other way? Is it even necessary

Well that's probably the thing I can do last. First see to have the whole thing set up and running. Should receive the device tomorrow.

It's probably not necessary, not much of a difference between being on 9.0 or 9.5 for games.
There are games that use 9.6+ encryption but they can be cryptofixed to work on emunand 9.0-9.5
And then games that just require you to be on higher than 9.0 you can just bypass that requirement with fw spoof when making the cia (and if you're just downloading them online most likely they already have fw spoof on them.)
That being said, personally I'd update it to 9.5, just for the satisfaction of being on the latest possible firmware, that and 9.3 has added some features to the home menu which you might be interested in.

imo an advantage to updating to 9.5 is, that's an additional thing that lets you tell if you are on emunand or sysnand. Since sysnand will probably remain at 9.0, when you are in system settings you'll usually see RX-E, but I've had it stay as Ver. sometimes and I don't know why (O3DS so i don't know if that happens on N3DS, but it doesn't affect functionality so that doesn't matter much.) But anyway, if emunand is on 9.5 and sysnand is on 9.0 then you know you are on emunand when system settings say you are on 9.5 :p

Also there's another CFW which does not replace the Ver. string, so if you are ever interested in it (CakesFW), it's good to have emunand higher than sysnand so you can tell which one you are on more easily. Generally you -shouldn't- really accidentally end up on sysnand system settings if you have menuhax autoboot, but it's always good to stay on the safe side and have more visual cues.

Going great so far, at the moment I'm installing Cubic Ninja .cia, next up is Gateway and setting up Emunand. Then it's not far anymore.
I got menuhax set up for the moment, works fine.

Make a back up of your NAND before anything else..

Backup that Nand asap keep it on your PC and a locked mega account so you don't lose it as a backup.
