Here https://gbatemp.net/threads/switch-...he-first-post-before-asking-questions.481215/ it says "Serials between XAW10075000000 - XAW10120000000 are possibly patched"
From https://gbatemp.net/threads/switch-noob-paradise-ask-questions-here.488277/ I used this https://damota.me/ssnc/checker/ My serial is XAW10076XXXXXX which i would've thought would give me a yellow (warning), but i got a green.

Should I still do the paper clip thing to get into the RMC, or is it not necessary? What else is the RCM for? https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-ultimate-list-of-mods-to-enter-rcm.502145/ Is there an easier way to get to RCM after hacking the console?

How do you prevent bricking? Wii i remember the nand file prevented it from being bricked.

I disconnected my console from online, my console is on 9.1.0... while writing this i found this https://gbatemp.net/threads/firmware-status.495078/ So I'm not sure if i can do anything with it being on 9.1.0, also can you downgrade to 8.0.0 or lower to get ride of a patch or would it still be in the system?

I'm sorry if this seems like I'm being a bit lazy, I'm just trying to be overly cautious since I don't want to brick my switch and not sure where all to look. Thanks in advance for any and all help, advice, and criticism.

What else is RCM for? For everything hack related, getting into RCM is a mandatory step when you do any hacking on switch. After installing any CFW you will still need to enter RCM everytime you want to boot CFW (after shutdown), but there's also auto RCM, which let's you to enter RCM automatically every time on boot, but in that scenario you will ALWAYS need to push any payload to boot your switch (mostly auto RCM is the best option to use).

As for bricking, in reality it's quite hard to brick you switch, cause you don't really mess with you nand at all... And as long as you have access to RCM, you can restore/rebuild your nand if you somehow fucked it up... But certainly, ALWAYS make a backup of you nand.

You don't need to downgrade unpatched switch, you can run CFW on any FW because the exploit is hardware related. The only reason to stay on low fw is to save fuses for possible future warmboot option, but you are now on 9.1 already, so for you there's absolutely no point in downgrading, cause your fuses are burnt.. You can search and read info about switch fuses on google.

Thank you for the fast reply. And holy crap i wasn't aware that you can fry your switch which this doesn't mention https://gbatemp.net/threads/the-ultimate-list-of-mods-to-enter-rcm.502145/. Know which to absolutely avoid? What exactly happens? It does mention it here. https://switch.homebrew.guide/gettingstarted/checkingrcm

I will go to the steps to make sure system is not patched even though i got a safe just to be sure.

Also they say 4gb is enough, but 64 gbs or higher is recommended. I don't have an sd card reader, what format does the sd card need to be? Would i be able to just use my switch, android phone, and pc to get it to the right format and should it be completely empty? I do have a 64gb sd, but it's my phone's sd card, but i can use an 8gb sd card for it instead.

How do you know if you clicked the pins down (i don't want to break or crush the pin accidentally)?

When i get the switch into RCM, do i then keep it in rcm until i'm set up for step 1 or do i need to get it out of rcm (idk how to do this) and plug it up while putting it into rcm? (In case it is the former, i am charging my switch up now).

I'm trying to cover all my bases with this post, was periodically adding to this post and rereading things (especially step 0, step 1 and step 2 since i never used payload) so i don't have to keep asking things.

Thank you again.

In times like this, refer to the sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ifBIsbTeTpk-bL1Ul9Z9ORPVX3BNH2pHlGW1Z0g8nvM/edit#gid=0
It's linked to in the thread you mentioned.

There is only one serial on the list with the same digits as yours: XAW100765XXXXX and it is unpatched, which is always a good sign.
It also says "XAW1007XXX and below are safe to buy"

That thread might not be as up to date. It hasn't been updated since August.

Got a laptop, or access to one? Pretty much every laptop has a SD reader.
You are going to want to invest in a large SD card, since Switch games can be large, some are 25-30 GB, and then another 25-30 GB for the latest update. The update is in some cases required to unlock all content.
128 GB is the minimum IMO, 64GB worst case will only fit 1 game with update and all DLC... But more likely 3-4 full length games, which is still not much. I started with a 200 GB and it filled up quickly, switched to a 512 GB and still have room left to spare, so 256-512 GB is a good size.

Android will just format it to exFAT (which you generally want to avoid on Switch as it's prone to corruption), I think you'd need root to format it as FAT32.

4gb is only enough for running cfw and basic homebrews, but it is way too low if you want emulation or trying unofficial switch roms (a single switch game usually takes 6-20gb if it's not 2d indie stuff)... So, i'd say 64gb is probably a minimal requirement. The best format for switch is fat32 since using exfat can corrupt your files when using cfw.

I don't know a lot about shorting pins and frying stuff, i didn't have a single problem with that, i used to short pin 10 and 1 iirc back when i was using paper clip (and you don't need to click the pins, you just need to short/connect them, don't put to much pressure... or just simply buy a jig).

RCM drains battery (slowly but it does), so you don't leave your switch in RCM for long... When you're ready to push a payload, go into RCM and push it, that's it. Then you just enable autoRCM and don't bother with shorting pins ever again. To shut down the switch you just hold power for 10-15 seconds and it will turn off (even from RCM).

Is it that exFat is prone to corruption (which is the case for any removable media), or is it the fact that exFat is not journaled, and only uses a single allocation table? This has never been answered to my satisfaction.

FAT32 is not journaled either. ExFAT doesn't suffer from this on any other platform though, it seems to be a Switch-specific issue. Corruption can happen on any platform, it's just not normal for the entire partition to be corrupted.

I don't have access to a laptop, i think i have a reader somewhere in my closet though.

As far as the sd size, I don't really plan on hoarding that many games at once, mario kart might be the only game that stays on my system consistently (only have smash bros and some free to play games on the console rn).

So if cfw is 4gbs, I don't plan on emulating things off my switch since I have a pc that I would think is more capable than the switch, how much would you say other apps that might interest me would take up? Is there a cheat code app? Trying to find a total of space I would have for games.

There's not many games on switch i really care to play. Beat botw on wii u, and mario kart 8 (friend just wants to play deluxe), i played odyysey at E3 and i played the galaxies so much it was kind of a pass. Astral chain, and both pkmn games might be the only things on it for good while. Rest probably would be relatively small indie games that aren't available on pc (which most are). I also have no problem deleting games if i need to or with redownloading.

And ah I assumed it would need to be NTSF since idt FAT32 can have a file over 4gbs.

Lastly do any of these matter while playing the game, (like does speed class 1 or 10 make a difference while playing?)? Idk the requirements for the switch to recognize an sd:
  • Maximum Read Speed
    100 megabytes per second
  • Maximum Write Speed
    40 megabytes per second
  • SD Bus Mode
    UHS-I
  • SD Speed Class
    Class 10
  • UHS Speed Class
    U3
  • Video Speed Class
    V30
  • Speed Class Rating
    10
Any way to tell if a sd card can be put into FAT32 before buying?

Thank you all.
