Hi guys I'm a lover of Final Fantasy VIII it was the only one I ever clocked back then when I had a PS1 now I was wondering which of all the available Final Fantasys on DS would be the closest match to FF8 (doesn't matter how distant it is, just which one an FF8 fan would enjoy most.

I believe the FF games available on DS are: FFIII, FFXII, FFCC, Chocobo Tales.

Your advice is greatly appreciated thanks guys.

FFCC & FFXII:Revenant Wings are separate games ... FFCC is not an FFXII title ... the FFCC 'series' is separate ...

FFXII:Revenant Wings is a tactical combat game ... Chocobo Tales is a kid's game, basically ... FFCC is a real-time RPG ... you may be best off with FFIII ...

FFIII is sure more similar (turn-based RPG) and it's a good one.
FF:XII : it's a real time strategy game, good but quite unplayable in big maps with lot of units.
Chocobo:It's a party-game (i hate this style but this one is really fun)
Also FF:CC isn't turn-based RPG but real time action-RPG and it's definitly great with 3 friends!

Keep in mind that there are also games 1 through 6 for GBA which would probably be worth a look, they're not 3D but the game mechanics are the same.

closest is IV i think(japanese only, but expected in the US in 2 months or so)
it's the only one with a time-bar to show who's turn it is in battle.

Yep the active time battle (ATB), same one used in Final Fantasy VIII.

FFIV DS is definitely the closest, and the Japanese version is entirely playable with a menu patch if you don't want to wait for the US release. The story isn't translated, but it's still pretty easy to follow.

FFIV Translation Wiki

Personally, I've played it through twice on the (J) version, and I'm saving my third playthrough for the (U) version to be able to see all the new cut-scenes in English.

Incredible game, and they've really done a nice job with the port. The graphics are great for the system, and the few changes in game mechanics are good improvements, imo.

I think it's the best RPG on the DS, and it's definitely the best turn-based RPG on the DS.

Wait. Is IV jap. the US 2 for the snes?
If so, i didn't know it was coming to the DS (at all) and THAT is one of my favorite games of all time.

Dear god please let that be true.

And where can i snag the translation patch?

(i don't need story, just menu... if its the right game, i know the story inside and out lol)

Because the game is coming out to the USA soon.

Edit:
QUOTE(distorted.frequency @ May 21 2008, 07:45 PM) Because it's going to be made for the US anyway?

Bah, darn you! You beat me to it..you sneaky Canadian...

Not to mention it's incredibly more difficult....

So much more difficult that they decided up front (way before an announcement of a US release) that it would never happen.

But I'm glad you guys came to a consensus.
