Im currently planning on trying to make a NDS Lite from scratch. I was planning on buying a used NDS Lite or Regular NDS and rebuild it into a brand new NDS Lite with a Hot Rod Red DS Lite Housing. Well enough with the theatrics. Heres my question

Is the NDS Lite Motherboard exactly the same as a Regular NDS Motherboard?

The motherboards are not the same. For starters the DS lite's is much smaller, plus the screens are different, as the original can't do the various brightness settings.

However you *might* be able to save money if you could find a cheap DS lite motherboard. (or sakvage one from a broken DS)

Um no. The DS lite is a completely different size to the phat DS (remember how GBA cartridges stick out?), so a phat board will not physically fit in the Lite housing. There probably are other differences, but that one's a killer

I think some newer Phats infact had Lite screen but the phat firmware still couldnt change the brightness. I think their was a homebrew or something that could change it for you.

Thanks everyone for their input. I think I might buy a broken DS Lite that has had its screen all scratched up and housing messed up and salvage it into a new Hot Rod Red DS or Lime Green.

if im correct all there is to a DS Lite is the motherboard slot 1, slot 2 on off switch volume switch the controls, battery, and lastly the housing right?

My list of NDSLite parts would be: Housing, mainboard, two screens, buttons, and battery. All the other things you listed (slot 1,slot 2, power switch, and volume switch) are soldered to the mainboard so unless they're broken you shouldn't have to mess with them.

A custom housing would be sweet! if you could make this thing boss, it can be on digg, MAKE, etc.. BenHeck Status!! Go for it man we're all behind you!

Wait you're going to make a DS from just components?
Because that ain't gonna work, if it was that easy their where clones

Its just a basic housing you can buy off dealextreme.com, They have multiple housings that look pretty neat if you want to be the black sheep of DS-es

Im rebuilding a old ds into a new one. Basically somewhat similar to how people buy scrap parts for junker cars and rebuild them into new cars. I will probably buy a broken ds on ebay for about 30$ buy a housing for 20$ lcd screens for 30$(if they're broken) and a touchscreen pad for 3$

Why would it not work? You can just buy the parts online or from broken DS's and just put it together...
