Come on folks! A number of your recommended using a multimeter. Somebody surely can provide some input as to how to properly use it!

If you want to see if the wires are going to the correct place, try doing a continuity test with the multimeter. Here is a short guide with some pics: http://www.ladyada.net/library/metertut/continuity.html

1. Solder the wires correctly on the NAND pinouts (Be careful, if you want to test this with a multimeter. Someone destroyed his XL with a multimeter!).
2. Solder the wires on a microSD <-> SD adapter or directly on the cardreader (A adapter is the better choice).

3. Insert the adapter in the cardreader and turn the 3DS on (If you connected the 3DS directly, just turn it on.). A bluescreen should be displayed.
4. Connect the cardreader to your PC. A new drive should appear.
5. Read the drive with Win32 Disk Imager.
6. Compare serveral dumps. If the dumps all match...
7. Finish!

IIRC you still can solder to a trace.

Alright folks. To start, thanks "helmet_" for the link. The good news is I was testing things correctly. Everything that should be connected is properly connected. Everything that should not is not.

Moving on, I picked up another 3DS XL today. They had the special Zelda edition in store and the impulse buy got me. Anyway, soldered that up and I am exactly where I was with the previous DS. That is to say, nowhere.

Below are some pics with some descriptions.

So I did two minor thing. First, I did NOT cut the pins on the card. I figured it would give me a large surface eara for soldering and a place for the solder to pool (in the springy U part of the pins). I don't see an issue with this, but since I haven't glued anything I can always still change it. Looking at the solder points, none are touching, and a multimeter test confirms this, so there shouldn't be an issue there I don't think?



I also went ahead and colo coded each wire with some permanent marker. I did this to double, triple, and quadruple ensure that everything was going to the correct place. You should be able to clearly match the wires from the motherboard to the micro SD adapter just by looking at these pics.



The DS boots just fine when the card is not in a erader. When it IS in a reader, it blue screen boots. Plugging it into the pc gives me the little "ding-a-ling" sound when plugged in, but does not prompt anything else. I tried the USB manager. I have tried THREE different external car readers and one internal card reader. NONE seem to work.

If I wasn't this stubborn I'd have given up by now. But I will not!

try this work for me on stubborn nand issues.

Open Win32Flasher app and Disk Management
Plug in 3DSXL and SDcard/reader into PC with 3DS off
Turn on 3DSXL and you should see blue Screen & hear USB sound from PC
Look at Disk Management and see if a 986mb or 1gb Partition populates?
If Not unplug USB while 3DS is on and plug back in until it populates.

Also check card reader is working correctly with a standard SD card on your pc

I have done all of the above. The one exception is that the USB sound occurs right when I plug the reader in (not after I plug the card in). As soon as I plug a regular SD card in (I use the one that came with the 3DS) it recognizes it in under a second. Pluggin and unplugging the modified card has netted me nothing (have tried over a dozen times thus far).

try to change everything that is still the same as before (as much as possible). for example, you soldered the ground in a different place than the one this post shows. I know that it should be the same, that it may be a dumb thing to say, etc., but at this point you have to try everything.

I see you're using a microSD adapter. I had these Problems too, when I used these - then I tried it out with a MiniSD adapter and everything worked flawlessly from then on. You might want to try that out, if you can find one.

I am sorry. I am a little confused by that response. Those post youlinked doesn't seem to tak about a ground? I mean, there is a ground in the picture, but I think that is th same ground that I am using in my example. No? Sorry for the confusion!

EDIT: My bad. I saw the ground in the picture (bottom right). I was looking at the huge square blob to the upper left there since that is what literally everyone else had been using. I will give it a try. I have nothing to lose lol.

The pins are a tad bit larger, yes. But other than that I don't have a loving clue what was going on here. With the microSD adapter nothing seemed to work, then I found this old card, crammed into my electronics drawer. And boom, it worked, for whatever reason it may be.

I don't think It'll matter anymore. I'll sell the 3DS to somebody who doesn't care about the hardware mod, and pick up a new one at Target tomorrow. It got ripped off because I had a poor soldering iron. I have a good one now, so it should be just fine.

So, Just to cover some bases I went ahead and swapped the ground (GRND) wire from where I had it to where "n1ghty" had it, as suggested by "tyons". Unfortunately, no dice.


(note that this is from my first 3DS, which is why the wires may look slightly different *lack of color coding*)

You sure you don't want someone to take a look at it? Probably get it fixed fairly cheaply.

Any other potential suggestions for me? I had someone offer me some more 'private' help, but I try to contact him and he is nowhere to be found (that's ok, just saying). Really not even sure what to try at this point.
