Is using Nintendo's virtual console the best for image quality when playing N64 games or is there a better homebrew emulator out there?

There might be a slight resolution boost for Wii U VC games but it won't be much.

I would just worry about compatibility because not every N64 game can be played that way.

Wii u vc for n64 is legit garbage tier unfortunately, you're looking at >100ms input lag no matter what

You're better off playing your games on wii vc in vwii, if you can get a compatible controller (can't believe a patch for gamecube controller adapter was never made for wii vc, but I guess wii u just was never that popular)

Wii U VC and injections is great for a majority of N64 games (so long as you remove the automatic dark filter), but for those that don't work, using Wii 64 Rice or Not 64 (either with Overclock enabled) will do a decent enough job to play pretty much any other N64 game that wont work through VC and injection. It's not perfect, but you'll find very few N64 games that you can't play at decent framerates on a Wii U through the combination of both means.

Just noticed there was a recent thread on this, you might find info that will help on there

How do the wii emulators compare with retroarch wii u? I have trouble with n64 on retroarch switch so I would think wii u would have trouble too but I've never tried it

Unless I missed something, there is no working N64 emulator in Wii U's retroarch. Granted, I haven't updated my Wii U's retroarch in at least half a year at this point, maybe more.

There is an extant core somewhere in the thread, but I remember reading it has very bad performance.

That wouldn't shock me. Might be worth checking out all the same.

Still, the latest builds of the vWii apps of Wii64 Rice and Not64 (again with overclock enabled for the Wii U) run many games at great consistent framerates. Again, by no means perfect, but I'm not sure there is an N64 game that I enjoy that I'm just straight up unable to play on my Wii U, and that's without checking what any available Retroarch core may do for the system on the Wii U.
