I think I know the answer, my fan seems be running 100% a lot. If I clean my fan and redo the thermal paste, I should be in good shape? Is there anything else I should be watching for? I did this with my laptop and it runs much quieter. Also, I have leftover thermal paste.

in theory it should. r u using a jtag or rgh, 'cause u can adjust the fan speed or include temp thresholds. and, r u sure it's not the dvd drive making all that noise?

It's stock. I sent it to Microsoft many many moons ago for RROD. I'll listen closer to know if it's the DVD drive or the fan. I doubt the harddrive can get that loud. It's like everything is vibrating. I was halfway thinking of getting a slim or E version console for the hdmi and better harddrive compatibility. My current one will have to die first.

it sounds like it's overheating. u'll get 2 red lights with that error. I'd suggest replacing the thermal paste and cleaning the fan. the problem with the phat systems is that the cpu and gpu r kinda boxed in next to the dvd drive and a ways away from the fan.

If you sent it to MS for RROD then chances are it was not a Jasper motherboard, most things pre Jasper were loud as a plane under normal conditions. It can be the DVD, not a lot you can do about that these days beyond use a ODDE. Back when there were modded firmwares that ran slower but not any more.
Usual image for identification, random copy I just found

Me RGH is loud cus I've set the fans higher but me stock Kronos model is relatively quiet.

I actually prefer to have the fans audible, atleast I know then it's getting cooled.

my 360 and ps3 r loud due to fans being set higher. I have temp thresholds for both set at 140 degrees F/60 degrees C, so the temperature never gets above that. I'm pretty sure the ps3's processors r designed to run at higher temperatures though, so I could set that one a little higher. anyway, with surround sound, u probably won't even hear them that often.

That 360 is just a loud system really but opening it up and cleaning the dust off the boards and then cleaning the fans makes a huge difference but it's probably not going to be silent. I kinda miss repairing and cleaning 360s, use to make a lot of money doing so.

Where's the temperature sensor placed though? On the CPU itself?

So, I took the Xbox apart and cleaned it up real good. It's still loud. I've found out that it's the fans and it's normal. I'm looking to maybe replace the fans. I found these. Im trying to find some without lights, though.

Make sure you've clean the old thermal gunk and replaced it properly.

Talismoon fans are okayish I heard.
You could snip away the back mesh (I found that it cooled me RGH with a degree or 2, especially since there's a better airflow.
Also, cut some cardboard and slap it on the GPU heatsink, extending the duct.

the thermal gunk is what i didnt touch. i should have, but i did get an old paint brush and wipe all the dust out. it was pretty bad. i think ill stop there. itll be a good reason to upgrade if this one dies. ive fed my audio from my tv to a bluetooth dongle. now, i cant hear the console at all and i can game all night without waking the kids.

That thermal paste was a mess. I cleaned it up and applied new paste there. Thanks for making me delve back in there. I never opened the Xbox like that and now I know that it'll be cooling properly.

So, I had 2 red lights now after the Xbox has been on for a few minutes. I went back in and replaced the thermal paste at the CPU or GPU (I only did one before). Now it purrs like a kitten. I feel much better now. :)

@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages
  • Veho @ Veho:
It does that when I edit a post.
  • Veho @ Veho:
It inserts a newline in a random spot.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
never had that i don't think
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
