Long story short, I think some water got in my o3ds XL a while back. This caused my 3ds to constantly hold down the L button. I opened it up and detached the ribbon from the motherboard and now it works. However, I'm unsure as to which is the problem. Should I try to replace the ribbon?
Firstly replace the ribbon, if that gets you no where , snoop around the motherboard around the L button plug 
, if you find any damaged parts replace them
