Sorry, I'm new here, so if I posted this in the wrong place please excuse me XD
So, I was wondering, I know you could extract midi files using Sappy Mod from GBA games, but I was wondering, as the title suggests, how would you do so with Sega Genesis games and DS games?
I want to get some midis from Time Trax (Genesis) and Professor Layton, but I can't seem to find anything on the matter anywhere... which is why I'm asking here now haha.

DS. Yeah it is usually easy enough to do, DS games tend to use a format called SDAT and it is fairly well understood. Typically you will not go for straight midi if you want it to sound exactly like the game, however you can do some things with midi if you want.
There are various means by which to do it, I cover several of them in my GBA/DS ROM hacking docs

Megadrive/genesis. Afraid not. Other than PCs and things like the Amiga, and prior to CDs and the GBA, games would tend to use their own custom sound engines for each game. That means you have to approach it from a very low level for each game and it is a pain to do. Some people have done it and made various rips, however it is not an easy task to do it properly. This is what would see many people tell you sound hacking on old consoles is hard to do.

That's unfortunate that the Genesis is so hard to rip, but I did look at your writeup, and every time I get to one of the tool links, they give me an error, I assume because they've been taken down? So where else can I get ndsdnsext?

I might have tripped a few redirects but I just checked the various links in my docs (the 2014 version linked at the top there) and they still got me where I needed to be.
Generally for the tools I linked to in the docs I reuploaded anything that was likely to go away (cheap host or just in general) to filetrip.

http://filetrip.net/nds-downloads/utilities/download-nds-sound-extractor-0-4-f28818.html has ndssndext, though it is probably not the suggested tool -- vgmtoolbox, even VGMtrans now it is being updated again, also https://gbatemp.net/threads/nds-music-player.306997/ is possibly worth a look.
