Memory Lane #3: The PlayStation turns 23 years old, today

ps1wasok.png

Hello again, readers! This is the third issue of GBAtemp’s new “Memory Lane” article series, where I write about influential and nostalgic games and hardware that have reached an anniversary milestone. This time, we’ll be taking a look at something that shaped the entire gaming industry, changing it forever. How a failed partnership between two companies eventually created a titan. 23 years ago to this day, our subject, the Sony PlayStation released in North America. It look nine months for the historic console to make its way out of Japan, and a further 20 days after the American release for it to hit shores in Europe. When it released, it would become a direct competitor to the floundering Sega Saturn, and the monumental Nintendo 64.

Sony’s success story started here, with this very system. At this point, they had little to no experience with developing video games, causing them to seek out other major developers and sign contracts with them to secure that the PlayStation would have a vast library. Thanks to this, and the PlayStation’s new CD-based technology, we’d see companies like Capcom and Square, who had been working together with Nintendo for ages suddenly jump ship for what Sony offered. 32-bit hardware coupled with impressive at the time 3D visuals made for a “next gen” experience that surpassed what the Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis could offer.

Though it was critically and commercially a success on the market, and heavily praised after it launched, there were not that many killer apps at the time. Ridge Racer, NBA Jam, Battle Arena Toshinden, and Rayman were some of the titles you could play on your PlayStation, and while they were all fairly enjoyed by gamers, there was a distinct lack of games that could put the PS1 in a league of its own.

Those would come later on. 1996 would bring about games like Crash Bandicoot, Resident Evil, and Tomb Raider, which defined the PlayStation as a mature console, but still one that could appeal to all ages as well. The following year would see two of the most beloved games of all time release; Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, and Final Fantasy VII. One was a peak of its genre, and the other defined how Japanese RPGs would be treated and compared to in the west for years to come.

If that wasn’t enough, Sony would go on to create the Dual Analog Controller, which was the first controller to popularize having two joysticks, and would later go on to be refined into Sony’s flagship controller, the DualShock. Now, dual-analogs have become the standard for video game controllers. Memory cards, too, were popularized on this console, as well as helping push forward an era of disc-based game releases. Many of the innovations made thanks to Sony's PlayStation helped influence future gaming trends, and its effects are still seen to this day.

More than two decades have passed since the PlayStation 1. From 3D platformers to JRPGs, a ton of varying games existed, kicking off long-running franchises, and revolutionizing older ones. Classics like Suikoden, Spyro, Valkyrie Profile, Crash, Final Fantasy, Resident Evil, Metal Gear Solid, and dozens more left lasting memories with players. Now, its successors, the PlayStation 2 and 3 have come and gone, and we have the PlayStation 4, which is making lasting memories with gamers, once more. With the advancements of the PlayStation, the world of gaming was forever changed, and it all started 23 years ago, on September 9, 1995.

Did you own a PlayStation at launch? Was it a console you grew up with? Are there any fond memories you have with playing the library of games? Let us know by sharing your experiences in the comments below!

If you liked this article, and would like to see more of these anniversary celebrations in the future, be sure to comment and let us know what gaming anniversary you'd like to see featured in future threads!

i recall my first time playing a PSX and i was not impressed. Ridge Racer i believe was the first title, my brothers friend had it. then my best friend came to sleep over and happened to have one except he had Street Fighter the movie game, battle arena toh shin den and i was in love.

MK3 on the PSX was my most memorable pick up. we were at the mall about 20 minutes early to wait in front of Babbages to open and once we got back to his house we played FOREVER. great memory from when i was a kid for sure.

Ah, the good ol’ PS1/PSX/PS/PS1X/s. Home to many classics such as Bubsy 3D. That’s it. Quite a gem. If you haven’t played Bubsy 3D, you’re really missing out and you should really give it a shot. Many levels. Fun platforms. Golden X award. Worth it.

I never had a PS1 during its glory days, but played a lot at a friend's house. When I got a PS2 one chilly December morning, I finally had a way to play PS1 games, and it didnt take long before I went to the local game store and bought Silent Hill. I had played a little bit on my friend's modchipped PS1 and was hooked directly (while said friend was hiding under his blanket, haha!).

Other games that blew my mind were Tony Hawk's Pro Skateboarding 2, Lunar Silver Star Story Complete (the origin of my username), Grand Turismo, Point Blank, Alundra... Aaaah, there were so many fun games... Now I want to play some more again!

Don’t forget the first grand theft auto. I’m not sure what prompted me to get a ps1, I was just out of high school. Driver, grand turismo, Tony hawk, silent hill, PUZZLE STREET FIGHTER!, parappa the rapper, legacy of kain, metal gear, final fantasy VII, crash bandicoot, jet moto, N2o, syphon filter, and die hard trilogy, were all in heavy rotation. A classic console. I still have my ps2 and am keeping it forever. So many great games and franchises became from the ps1. Thanks Chary for the memories.

I have moved on from PSX. but the last game I still want to play is Moon: RPG Remix. I have been waiting that game to be translated since forever.

Haven't played any psx games for 4 years, but still glad to purchase FF 7, 8 ,9 on steam because back then I couldn't buy the legal copies. it's kinda hard to replay those games because they feel so outdated. had I not played them during psx era, I would have not played them ever, so I am glad I grew up with the best games ever published on PSX such as xenogears, FF 7, saga frontier, final fantasy tactics, suikoden 2, etc.

I realized that I probably will never play psx games again because I always got a psx emulator installed on my phone. I always think "ah I want to play some old games later!" but I end up never open the app or copying a game to my phone in the past 2 years.

I have fond memories of owning a PS1 circa 2004/2005, my Dad wouldn't allow me to play it by myself because he thought I would ruin the disks (a valid concern), so I mostly played on my NES, and later a SNES. I did spend most of my childhood playing classics such as Rayman, Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, Gran Turismo, Castlevania, Tomb Raider and Resident Evil... I missed out story heavy games since I didn't know English back then, but I still had lots of fun! I also played some unknown(?) games like Croc and some Woody Woodpecker kart game.

For sure a memorable and important console, it ended up spawning new franchises (like Persona!) and cementing others as brand names (Hello, Metal Gear!). Shame it also ended up killing SEGA (they would have survived if SoA and SoJ weren't fighting like toddlers), started Nintendo's downfall (although Nintendo's also on fault there) and indirectly ended up creating the Xbox in the long run

Just curious, how did it change tactical RPGs compared to Tactics Ogre, Fire Emblem, the Shining series, Treasure Hunter G, and Front Mission, just to name a few.

Oh, and I'm not arguing or criticizing, I'm just curious :) I never played Final Fantasy Tactics.

I remember most of my neighbors only go to my place just to play PSX (Toshinden, Tekken, FFVII or VIII and Resident Evil) and nothing else. How I miss that especially during school years.

Sadly my PSX (bulky one, who survived various mods, disc reading issues and power outages) got swept in a flood 3 years ago and never seen again

If I was forced to pick a favorite console, it would have to be the Playstation. The sheer breadth of interesting content is unmatched (though you need to really delve into the Japanese side of the library to fully appreciate this). Developers and publishers at that time were arguably more passionate and willing to take risks exploring new genres, and the system being an unprecedented hit didn’t hurt either.

I suppose younger people today might find it hard to get past the primitive 3d graphics, but for me the games remain completely enjoyable and I continue to find gems that I missed the first time around. And hey, it’s the system that gave birth to Castlevania: SOTN, my favorite game of all time (sorry Super Metroid, I still love you too).
