Having just got my PSP to run Prometheus, I'm looking at getting a decent size memory card. I have a 1GB card at the moment, which is holding 3 PS1 games and about 40 GBA games, but I'd like a bigger card. Preferably 8GB+. So here are my questions.

- Anyone know where I can get one at a decent (read: cheap) price?

- I've been cruising the net and some of them have 'mark 2' on them. What does that mean? Does it make any difference?

- Some on eBay claim they're specially for the PSP Slim. Does it use a different size card to my Phat model?

- Why aren't they sold on ShopTemp?

I got a 8GB for around £15 at CeX, take a look in there.

No. Just don't go on eBay.

Because it's Sony and a relatively new online shop?

An 8GB will run me around 20 quid from CEX, but they never have any in stock. Better than my local GAME store though, they claim an 8GB card sells for about 50 quid. F that.

This seems a pretty good deal. Free P+P. And Wolverhampton's a stone's throw away from Coventry, so delivery should be nice and quick. More than 10 available so no rush either.

Always been meaning to ask, btw. Why when you have an 8GB memory card can you only use 7.66GB of it? Where the hell's the rest of the space? Been bugging me ever since I got my 8GB Micro SD for my Cyclo.

It's taken by the system, whatever that means. It's the same with a 4GB Memory Stick by the way, I have never had the full 4GB on my SanDisk, there's always some 200 MB missing.

Well tell the system I want my god damn space back. Theiving git. It's hardly a major issue I admit, but 300+ MB going walkabouts means less PS1 games on my PSP, and since there's seemingly no valid reason for the wandering memory syndrome, it pisses me off.

Actually you made me think... It would be nice if the sellers of these things advertised them like this:

8GB Memory Stick pro Duo*

*Please be aware the system takes a part of capacity, so the actual size may be about 7.7 GB

its an issue of A.) formatting does take space, and B.) the olde 1024 bytes in a kbyte, 1024 kbytes in a mbyte, 1024 mbytes in a gbyte idea.

1gbyte= 1024mb = 1048576kb = 1,073,741,824 bytes

the metric prefix "giga" means 10^9 or 1 billion bytes (1,000,000,000)

1,000,000,000 / 1024 = 976562.5 / 1024 = 953.674 / 1024 = 0.9313
^base ^kb ^mb ^gb

the manufacturer gives you 8gb (8 billion bytes).

Mark 2 memory sticks are memory sticks designed to be used with high read/write requirements (Bluray camcorders and stuff). I reckon it's just a test platform for that technology for their next high capacity memory sticks though.
Get a Sandisk or Lexar(Although many people claim to have problematic ms)
If you find a Sony MS anywhere made in japan, i wouldn't say no to that either.

wow... i spend 15 minutes giving you guys an explanation for why your memsticks arent exactly x.xxgB, and im totally ignored

Get the SanDisk, it's faster on the read/write than the official Sony card.

Just watch for sales or grab from amazon themselves so you don't get a jacked up pirate unit. The 8GB SanDisk is just $30USD~ which is a steal considering they are MSRP'd at $75. I got lucky and paid the same at local retail with a Father's Day weekly sale at Radio Shack of all places a couple weeks ago.

That 8GB is so stinking helpful considering the big install Gran Turismo (950MB) does on Data Install, and then MGS PeaceWalker is nearly the same between the full install, other data installs it stock does, plus save games. Even with all that, 6 PS1 games, 4 PSN, and the fourth Indiana Jones movie squeezed into around 1/2GB too.

I still got nearly 1/2 the card free.
