Isn't there a way to brick updates through installing the a wrong IOS on the vwii side?
I wonder if Mario Maker would still boot up
That, along with blocking URLs, stops online updates. Disc updates are located... On the disc! There's no way around it until/unless:
- A firmware spoofer is created.
- An emuNAND is created.
- An IOSU exploit is created and allows us to run backups with the update partition taken out.

I don't know why everyone is so shocked that Mario Maker comes with [firmware higher than 5.3.2]. It's been out for long enough now that it's getting pressed into the discs. Every new game going forward will have [firmware higher than 5.3.2] on it.

Yay! I am picking up Mario Maker tomorrow, but really don't want to update and miss out on hacking...
It's $100 for a brand new Wii U without the gamepad, nothing is confirmed yet as far as firmware spoofing goes. It could take a long time before that happens and until then you'll be missing out on online and new games. Still seems worth it to me to update and buy a second Wii U for hax later if needed. But it's up to you.

Seems to me all he did was warn people about updating. He didn't confirm that it was coming.
Unless you are not talking about his tweet?

Anyway, kernel hax are not confirmed for 5.5.0 and it's recommended to stay on older firmware because of this, so obviously the same applies to firmware spoofing. That is not a definitive no for it happening on newer firmwares though, if kernel hax are released for 5.5.0 then there's nothing stopping firmware spoofing from being possible.

Why would he recommend staying on older firmware if he didn't have a solution?

Why is this even a thread? Mario Maker releases when 5.5 is the latest firmware, and 5.5 is the only firmware you can be on to use the online features.

Should've been a big fat "duh".
