That's weird - I checked MAIO 3.02 before I uploaded it & it worked OK on my AK2i

Unfortunately I'm currently in work (on night shift) & the acekard is @ home - & I won't be able to check it all out again until late tomorrow

Can you supply a bit more info though... it MIGHT help narrowing where the fault may be

You say it doesn't 'autoboot'-

It sounds like the 'ak4menu.nds' on your card hasn't been replaced by the one supplied in MAIO for some reason, since it's this file that does the 'autoboot' of Moonshell instead of 'autoboot' AKAIO

Can you check the file size of the 'akmenu4.nds' on your card against the one supplied in the MAIO pack you downloaded
(In Maio 3.01/02 it should be ~170kb IIRC)

If they are different - rename the 'akmenu4.nds' on the card to something else & copy over the one in the MAIO pack & try again
 
don't say that you actually renamed a copy of moonshl2.nds to akmenu4.nds. guy, that's a great brain you have. thanks, it should work now.

now it won't work with child update.
- original akmenu4.nds (files from /moonshl2 and moonshl2.nds are different)
- moonshl2.nds renamed (please load Moonshell from DirectBoot)
- moonshl2_DirectBoot (black screen + ARM9 problem)

Erm No....... the 'akmenu4.nds' that comes with MAIO is in fact a renamed 'moonshl2alt.nds' file from Xenon++ mshl2tools download. It is NOT a renamed 'Moonshl2.nds' file

It is this file that allows Moonshell to be booted up automatically (it also does something to allow Ak2i to 'think' that System files exist) - that is why you (should) get a quick flash of a blue screen on the bottom screen with text on it, before you see the usual Moonshell's 'Black screen on top/white on bottom' warning messages when starting
(If you look @ the video on first post - you'll see the blue screen flash up @ ~16sec just after you see the 'Loading..' text)

The 'trick' of renaming 'Moonshl2.nds' to 'akmenu4.nds' to get it to autorun only works on Ak2 (not 'i') & AK RPG - it doesn't work on AK2i - if you tried you get a 'System Files Missing' message
 
so that trick doesn't work with child update. should I install Moonshell without MAIO files and try to do the moonshl2.nds (64KB file) rename trick?
 
I'm totally confused to why you're having so much trouble

In theory an install of MAIO v3.01/02 on a clean MicroSD card should have no problems autobooting into moonshell when you switch on (It's been proven to work on a AK2.1 and AK2i - what card have you got ??). You should also be able to run ROMS through Moonshell as well

HOWEVER - by installing the 'child update' you actually overwrite a file that has been modified to allow Moonshell to run ROMS - in affect, STOPPING Moonshell from running ROMS
.. but it should STILL attempt to autoboot regardless (since you're not overwriting the akmenu4.nds on the root)

But the problem you seem to be having is that your can't autoboot into Moonshell AT ALL
I can only suggest the following

> Once again, backup up your card
> Format your card using the panasonic formatter - just to make sure the card has NO possible files that can cause problems
> Reinstall MAIO v3.0x
> Try again to see if it autoboot into Moonshell

I can only guess that when you install MAIO you have actually corrupted a file somehow
 
I installed the MAIO files and autobooted correctly. when I installed the child update, I got an error ("NDS file version of starting MoonShell2" and "Files of installed moonshl2 folder" are different).

Which it does seem to be doing - Moonshell IS starting up on switch on, but when loading it is finding a problem with the files in the moonshl2 folder - which I'm guessing is that it's doing a 'checksum' or something - but because of the 'child files' it's finding a fault & therefore freezing & giving you the message

Its because the main idea behind this topic lies in the fact that it is the wonderous homebrew, Moonshell2 and all great things about Moonshell2 end up here xD.

What I think he means is that since it's 'Moonshell Autobooting on a Acekard' ONLY (not autobooting on a R4/DSTT/M3 etc) then it should really be in the Acekard Forum, which IMHO I think it should be (so why the hell DID I post this in Homebrew forum originally ???

so there's no solution yet? can you contact Xenon++ to make a alternative moonshl2alt.nds from moonshl2.nds (child update)? I guess that a new akmenu4.nds will autoboot now correctly.

You could just rely on Xenon++'s other tools...Its not like you MUST have the overlay.dll hack to boot commercial roms from Moonshell2. Thanks to Xenon++ making the NDSLink.nds, it is really easy to just use the latest version of moonshell2. As for your problem and the reason why it says the stuff inside the moonshl2 folder is different is because the moonshell2 child update is using 2.10 instead of 2.09 and so it gives back the error. I never exactly figured out which file it checks (I always thought it was that version file).

Anyways if you just use MS2.10 and put on the child update, just head over to Xenon++'s files and grab the ndslink.nds put your games in a folder that you are going to hide and then configure the ndslink.ini to match your setup. After that, just make sure you have the inilink.nds set up correctly in your extlink folder (use MAIO's as an example). All you have to remember is to run the ndslink.nds first because ndslink will create pointer files referenced by the ini and you will be using that as your games folder while using Moonshell2. When all is said and done, you only need to run ndslink.nds when you add a game to the hidden game folder and then a pointer file will be created for Moonshell2 use.

Lol, then you didn't really need MAIO. If you are just using it for music, then put in the regular install and use the child update renamed.

With moonshl2alt.nds renamed as akmenu4.nds and dldi-patched with ak2_sd.dldi

BTW I don't want to argue about "moving to Acekard forum".
Actually MAIO is just a distribution and DS Env Maker has a feature to build MAIO v3.x (sorry, but I have added credit to CannonFoddr).
It is useless to argue things which don't depend on human in building.

Seeing that you took the trouble of adding it - I thought I'll have a look @ DS Env Maker & try it out,

However either I'm doing something wrong, choosing the wrong options or whatever - but the MAIO option is not working quite right
Download & extract DSEMstub_7z915
Run 'Update.bat'
Run 'Menu.exe'
  • Install menu
    [1] Install AKAIO
    [4] AKAIO latest
    Install Menu
    [3] Moonshell2 (2.10 stable or beta9)
    'y' (to 'You can DOWNGRADE to 2.10b9 to enable commercial ROM loading')

    [0] Check Moonshell
    'y' (to 'To Enable commercial ROM loading (without link launcher), hack overlay.dll ?')

    [A] Addon Menu
    [3] MAIO 3.xx
    'y' (to 'are you going to use Moonshell >= 2.07 with modified overlay.dll?)

    Formatted MicroSD card with Panasonic formatter
    Open up the '/Setup/' folder & copied it all over to the root of flashcard
The problem is that although it autoboots moonshell - Moonshell is freezing on bootup with the following message on the bottom screen

"Files of installed moonshl2 folder " are different

Have I not done something right or something in the wrong order ??

Aw, the first byte of version.dat should be 0x09? Very sorry. I'll test later.
