Hey all,

Had an earlier thread in here about it, but I can't seem to find it anymore... and it's probably long past calling it "necro'ing that thread."

In short, got to pick up a PSP-2000 off someone's hands that was about to throw it out, since in their terms it was busted. In reality, what was wrong was that the factory (yes, the original) Sony battery was ready to burst, and the screen was somehow cracked in several ways. And all the more surprised that what I see as the screen is actually just a layer atop the actual screen.

Well, finally at least some progress. I was able to finally get in a replacement screen for it that works like a charm. Looks to be on firmware 5.03... but I wouldn't know how to tell what kinda motherboard there is, if that is even relevant anymore.

So, here are the facts that I currently do know:
  • PSP-2001
  • Firmware v5.03
  • No obvious mods or telltale signs of CFW, yet ;)
So with that said, looks like I need a couple things to make it more complete. At the least, a new battery and a memory card to make it functional and do the CFW thing, obviously.

I have a line for being able to possibly get one of those extended ones locally for like $10... the upside there would be that if it doesn't work as advertised, I at least have an easy way to return/exchange it. No, I would not want an external battery for the same reason I'm currently not fond of how I have to operate it now. All it would take is one tug of a cable and the thing dies immediately, since there is no battery in the system. Supposing that that doesn't work out, what would be a good alternative for a battery? Obviously the more hours I can get per charge, the better... but price IS an object. And when I finish fixing this, I obviously don't want to have to drag around an external battery to use it properly.

Second, it seems silly but I am still debating whether to try to get an adapter or if it's even worth getting a genuine MSPD at this point, especially considering the ever-loving "$ony tax" and the ridiculous price hikes Sony-specific storage always seems to go for. i know that between the games and homebrew, I can easily fill up at least one 32gig card, as that's what I almost do with the internal + 16gig M2 card in my PSP Go.

Third, are there anything specific I should look out for regarding the modding potential on this system? Like motherboard revisions? I know that was a pretty big deal with the 3000 series, but don't remember if that was an issue with the 2000's, or if there's anything specific revisions of the 2k series would prevent doing.

A short update, if I may.

Got my battery. It did come with a bigger door obviously to account for its larger capacity; however, frustratingly the door it came with doesn't seem to do a good job of holding it in place.

Funny enough at first I was trying the M2 in one of its provided adapters, and found the thing turning off almost immediately as I inserted it. At first I thought it was a problem with the battery not accepting the charge, but reading up it seemed that this is how the system reacts when the firmware is corrupt? Thankfully I did have a spare adapter for it, which works perfectly fine.

Now on to the next issue at hand. Right now I can't even run PSPIDENT on it to see what kinda motherboard it has. It might be the fact that it is on firmware 5.03 at this time, but yea, it seems to be refusing to run any homebrew. Obviously, I want to mod this bad boy. How should I proceed?

If it's on official firmware, go for PRO CFW. https://code.google.com/p/procfw/downloads/list

Check the Data Code (battery compartment, next to the serial code) - if it's 8B or lower, update straight to 6.60 OFW, then install PRO-C CFW and use cIPL Flasher to perm it, if it's over 8B, install 6.20 OFW, then PRO-C CFW and use the Perm Patch.

I didn't see a datr code separately, but i did notice the last two digits being 87. On a lark i updated to 6.60 and then used PRO b10 since i recalled issues launching any psx/psn releases on the first release of PRO-C2 on my psp go. Looks like i can do 6.60 permanent on it. :yaypsp:

Now just need to give it enough storage. Can pro cfw support more than 32gb's? I remember seeing a cfw user with a standard psp somehow able to use two 64gb sd's in an adapter to have a ton of space.

By buying an adapter you have to take into account the distinct possibility that some plugins and homebrew may not work properly due to a small amount of lag between mounting the SD's in the adapter and mounting the adapter in the PSP. Some adapters have issues with this, some don't. If you don't care about that and just want ISO's *or* if you're willing to risk it since adapters are cheap as dirt - go nuts with SD cards.

As for C2 firmware, I'm pretty sure that they ironed out most issues. ;)

Glad that you could Perm it, well done!

I'm sure that using a genuine pro duo would indeed be the best for compatibility. I just can't get past the price. $70 for a 32gig compared to $20 for a microSDHC (sometimes even UHS-1 Sandisk when they go on sale @ Best Buy) is hard to swallow. There has to be a better price for these things...

I also am well aware of the issues with adapters... As I just finished saying, I am currently using the 16gig M2 card from my PSP Go in the meantime through an adapter. The first one actually seemed to fuss with it enough that it shut off as soon as I stuck it in, but liked the second. Didn't notice much of a speed difference there. I know the adapter route is attractive to me, personally, because if I could break past 32gigs that it can see and use, I can even then just put all the games and homebrew all there, which would primarily be emulators. I suppose now I could primarily leave the psp go to run all the homebrew that way...

You know, it's funny. A few years ago I would have never considered buying a PSP, considering that it seemed Sony was intent on breaking everything that was cool about it. And now I ended up with a go that was pre-modded, and managed to revive a standard PSP... and now, have two working PSP's. Funny how life works out that way.:gba:

Oh, just a little thing to share, since I was able to run PRO B and PSPIDENT.

But yea, I distinctly remember about how PRO C2 had an issue where i couldn't run ANY of the PSX/PSN games at all; granted, that was on my go, but I'd rather avoid that hassle.

Okay, managed to find and install PRO-C (Fix3).

Also, went to Fry's because I remembered they had at least an MS Pro Duo adapter. Turns out it was a rebadged Photofast CR-5400. Got it and a couple of basic PNY 16gig µSD's to get the 30 gigs of storage. Now in the process of loading it up.

On the way there though, I went into this game shop to see if I could try out the UMD drive. Problem is, with both either a UMD movie or a game, I didn't even feel it spin up to load. What could I troubleshoot there to see if I could get it operable again? Would that be a simple fix, or might it require replacing the UMD drive on the system?

So in update, it doesn't seem like the UMD drive even attempts to read when I press down the little switch inside that I guess would alert the system that there is a disk in it. So the question is, would that be a motherboard issue or a UMD drive issue?

Okay, so needless to say, it definitely seems like the adapter I got is indeed a Photofast CR-5400, comparing images to a genuine one vs. a knockoff. Having the two 16gb cards is rather nice, though the class 4 has also hurt load times from what I've seen. Thankful that at least no homebrew I've yet to try has had an issue with it.

That said, I have seen conflicting reports about this, and wanted to ask you guys, since this bunch seems to know about this. Very simply, one of the things that attracted me to the CR-5400 was the prospect of being able to put far more storage in the PSP than what Sony officially sold/supported. I know that the max that they officially released for an MSPD is 32gigs. But then I've seen a few people (including posting screenshots) showing that they were able to put far more into their systems. From 2x32gig cards for 64(~59GB formatted), to even 2x64gb microSDXC's for a mindboggling ~118GB formatted capacity. Obviously can't afford to go whole-hog and buy the 64gig cards yet... but that said, I also am aware that this was something the (C)FW had to support. So the question is, does anyone know if the PRO CFW's support such a ginormous capacity in this manner?

I think CFW has nothing to do about Memory Cards going larger than 32gb.

I had mine with 64GBx2(118GB) Memory card. It works either in OFW and PRO-C. All games works just fine, plugins works fine and homebrews as well.
Already occupied around 80gb which I dumped on various UMD I have, as well as PS1 and homebrews and emulators.

I do notice that theres a certain amount of lag (5-10seconds) on CR5400 adapters, but I had my 2nd dual adapter (unbranded actually, only with a print dual microsd) doesnt have this kind of 5-10second lag when accessing memory card, and all the homebrews and emulators I had issue before (as well as plugins) began to work again.

I recommend you to grab a adapter that doesnt have the lag issue.

So anyway. One more repair question.

Managed to get a chance to head to the store where I bought the battery after getting it up and running. After trying both a UMD game and a UMD movie, I find that the thing doesn't even attempt to spin up the disc, much less read it. what would be the most likely cause of that? Or rather, what would be the most likely part to replace to get that to work again? I know UMD isn't as big a deal now as it was at first, but definitely weighing my options to make it 100% again, since I am already this far along.
