Let's be friends!

ptc_thumb.jpg

Gamers have been for long considered as anti-social freaks locked up in their room, glued to their screens, only coming out of that cave to answer the call of nature...

rsz_2d0.jpg

Ahem! Let’s prove this stereotype wrong! We at GBAtemp are a huge community of internet browsers with one thing in common: games. Well, is it the only element in the intersection of our individual Venn diagrams? As part of the same community, why don’t we share what we do as gamers? What are your interests? What are your favorite activities? Which other websites you browse and what for? What TV shows you watch? Which YouTube channel you subscribe to and await impatiently for their new videos? I’ll leave that and other ideas you want to share to you in the comment section!

I’ve realised that too often we lock ourselves up in what we call boring routine. You might relate to: School/college/uni has already started and the work load is piling up. Another day at work and the traffic’s not getting any better. Nothing to make your daily activities more enjoyable, more lively? What usually relieves us from said routine might be out of reach or too time consuming or worst even, has become redundant. Most of the time it’s due to lack of ideas or lack of new stimulation that we don’t find anything that interests us. But if we get to know more people, talk and share ideas with them, we might discover new interests and finally get out of the monotonous routine.
rsz_btarrp9yc.png
As it turns out, here’s a platform to share your favorite hobby/habits/stress-reliever with and help fellow gamers, who might be in need of these! As the adage goes, sharing is caring. And friends care for each other :)

I thought we already had this thread
http://gbatemp.net/threads/who-the-hell-are-you.332389/

I already went in there but to answer the specific questions

What are your interests? What are your favourite activities?
Building things, also pulling things apart and seeing how they work. I do quite like fiddling with video as well.

Which other websites you browse and what for?
http://www.theregister.co.uk/ tech and science news.
https://www.schneier.com/ for security related topics and essays from one of the leading lights in that field.
I guess I quite like http://freakonomics.com/blog/ as well.
http://www.azom.com/ because metals and materials is supposed to be my thing.
I am active on three forums including this one, no social media for me (mainly as I am an anti social bastard). The others being romhacking.net (for obvious reasons) and the old, largely inactive, support boards for the EZFlash series of flash carts.
I do read a lot of books, watch a lot of films and other such things. I will take reviews for such things from wherever I might get them and would like to think I am pretty good at spotting bad reviews or good information within them.

What TV shows you watch?
I run the gauntlet from mindless cheesy action to serious and invested but with cheesy (if realistic) action at times. We have http://gbatemp.net/forums/books-music-tv-movies.191/ for a reason though.
Favourite fiction. The Wire, I reckon so many shows owe what they can do to this one.
Favourite non fiction. Ask me what the biggest cultural affront that the US ever did to the UK? A: At various points they swapped out David Attenborough and dubbed some other randoms in for various documentaries he did, I find it hard to understate how far off cool that is... I guess is I overdubbed Mister Rogers with whatever the seaside town white trash type that the UK might offer up it might begin to go somewhere (and I actually otherwise like many of the people they used). That said for pure documentaries, though of vastly different topics, then Adam Curtis probably beats him, though if both phoned me up and wanted a beer in different pubs then David Attenborough would be where I would be no ifs, no ands, no buts (as in if I had front row/pit tickets to a Tom Waits and Black Sabbath (original or current lineup) double bill concert the same night there is a not unreasonable chance I would be sitting in a pub trying to think up meaningful conversation instead).

I suppose that also brings us to the subject of music but we already have a thread for that http://gbatemp.net/threads/rate-the-song-from-the-poster-before-you.159375/
That said if you can imagine it on the soundtrack to a Guy Ritchie film or a Quentin Tarantino soundtrack, or from one of the artists mentioned above, then I will probably go it. If it is a pisstake type song or an interesting take on an old song then... I do not want to say even better but it will probably tempt me to give it a go.

Which YouTube channel you subscribe to and await impatiently for their new videos?
I subscribe to nobody as years ago there was this fine invention called bookmarks (I also have no youtube account for as I said I have no social media type accounts), and beyond that youtube these days does not seem to display new videos for every subscription you might have (it is half database tech, half psychology as to why), if you want those though

Plus related channels for most of those, though less commonly.

So yeah a fairly even mix of games (even if I have not watched many of them in weeks), video/film related, more traditional engineering/fabrication, computers/electronics, woodwork and I guess some historical European martial arts/history as well but I am not sure I can claim that last one as one of the main things I do -- I can and do spend my days learning engineering, computing/electroincs (and hacking, right through to the psychology/social engineering side of things), audio/video/photography as well as doing or doing things that will directly finance more of the same, probably by doing some aspect of that for someone else. The only time my spears get involved is when I make one to sell (which would probably contravene all kinds of weapon laws so I do not) or figure out how someone made one 2500 years ago (I have a bit of a thing for archaeometallurgy). As I am in the UK (or at least the southern half of it) in 2015 there is not a lot of call for any of those and rather than actually become more readily employable my usual response is learn even more about those things I already know, which, owing to said not being terribly employable, I have an awful lot of time to pursue.

I don't know why but I'm obsessed with Nuclear engineering. Also, I really want to learn to play the accordion.
As for TV shows/movies, I prefer 80s Greek films, the comedy in them is excellent.

@RustInPeace pretty honest comment! That's what we need for a better world! Honest people! :grog: (P.S: There are only 2 kinds of people, those who know about efukt and those who will.)

Haha @ninditsu we could give your shop a visit sometimes :D

You mean this @Dork ?

Oh sweet @kehkou! What do you like drawing? It's my favorite hobby as well! Nothing pro though. And what kind of music do you create? Got a personal youtube channel?

That's neat @regnad! My friend wants to start bass guitar although having never played guitar before. Any tips for him? And we're super hyped on this hypothtical garage band of ours...

Thanks for your comment @LightyKD! Hope you can be a space tourist sometime soon! Hey, there's even water on Mars, apparently :D
Music is definitely a great companion when browsing online, can't imagine how it would be without it... Come on! We are all weird in our own ways, and that's what makes us unique!

We already are @VinsCool! :yay:

@anhminh hahaha, maybe it could be the topic of discussion for another time... Hope you are finding your basic social needs here, you can always join our IRC or chatroom whenever you feel like it ;)

Woah! Great work with your render @New_Newbie! If that's your hobby, ever thought of turning it into your job? Think about it! :D I've been playing the guitar too, but not too seriously. Any good noob guide around?

Nice @mbcrazed you actually play the ocarina! I've been thinking of getting a proper one for a while now...
I also prefer watching anime over TV series because the episodes are shorter (lame excuse I know) but TV series don't have Durarara!!

Harp then @Vipera? Duolingo is basically learning languages for gamers :yay: Nooo, VSAuce3 is with Jake, I find his videos interesting, check out this playlist!

You have it going smooth, our musical friend @Haterbait! Got any of your music that you want to share?

Oops @FAST6191 didn't know about those threads, they should be pinned to the homepage I think...
I too think that David Attenborough isn't given enough merit with those dubbings (conspiracy?) I know some people who don't know about him! :wtf:
Would love to see your metal works!:yay: Any pictures?

@MrJason005 that's as retro as it gets! I have a friend who similarly watches old Turkish series, each like 2 hours long :wtf: How's it going with those nuclear fission?

I draw cartoons, my wife is more the realist. Im currently working on a series titled Atarian Conquest
about a teenage alien empress trying in vien to expand her empire. My username is one of the characters.

I mostly create contemporary-classical and marches, but others as well, I would like to create bgm for a game I'm making, but im not that good.

I do not have a channel but I once uploaded a video with a defunct account titled Skate Wrecks with the discription "Albuquerque (or was it just ABQ?) skaters fall on their asses!"

My Interests: Gaming, Weird Al, Accordion Playing, Learning German, and Studying for Jeopardy (I'm going to try to play someday).
My Activities: Gaming, Hacking Consoles, Hiking, Working Out (for the ladies;)),and hanging with friends.
As far as TV shows go, I usually watch a series through and only one at a time, right now it's Gotham.
Youtube: I don't watch much, well, other than 2snacks and mediocrefilms.
Websites: *CENSORED*
That's about it for now.:P

I like listening to music (tupac, snoop, nwa, ice cube, eazy).

I have school pretty much every time im not using my PC or PS3. Sometimes I blay basketball, but haven't been on a team for a couple years now.

Not much more to say. I like hacking nintendo consoles and learning how they work by looking into hardware, NANDs, RAM dumps, etc.

My Interests: Learning German

I took 6 straight years of German in Middle and High School. It's been 5 years since I graduated, and I've lost almost everything I learned from German. It's embarrassing. I think you can never lose fundamentals, picking up on the dialogue without subtitles. At the same time, I watched a German movie that had no English subtitles, and I struggled big time. Love Bavarian Style, the plot was about a man who pretended to be gay so he can chaperone a rich man's daughter. I did not catch that plot at all, it just looked like men and women having softcore sex and doing cartoonish foot chases. Maybe a German viewer would say the same thing, it was a sex comedy, plots aren't that well defined.

I'm building a computer next year and with that I'm going to try and develop games in Unity (Or unreal engine) and learn how to model my own characters. (Since those are just official Nintendo models.) I'm planning to use those rendering skills to help me along with game development, and my guitar and instrument stuff to compose the music for them!
Actually, I started out with a Happy Traum country playing beginners course, mainly because mom told me if I learned that, THEN she'd get me an electric guitar. So starting out I wasn't thrilled, but in the long run I'd recommend that course. I listen to Heavy Metal myself, but any other course would've been too complicated for me. Thanks for taking the time to respond, kind sir!

If I'm not gaming, I usually spend my time listening to music on a daily basis. Looking at the weekly Billboard charts and analysing them has always been one of my passions. I like to get to know songs before they become hits; usually the particular ones that reside at the bottom of the Hot 100 tend to slowly creep their way up the charts unless it gets a hot debut. I mainly look at the US Billboard charts every Tuesday to see how the songs stack up. Mainly open to most types of music since I've grown to enjoy the different genres the Billboard had to offer over the years (i.e. for some weird reason, I enjoy pop-country a lot more now than I did). Check out Spectrum Pulse on YouTube if you're into this sort of stuff...

I guess if I not listening to the latest songs, I'd be watching TV series, anime (if you're a P.A. Works fan like me, you're awesome -- love watching 'Charlotte' right now), or keeping track of my poorly picked team in the fantasy NHL hockey pool. Soccer (Premier league) and tennis has recently grown on me over the last few months, both in terms of watching and playing. I love sports, too, so I enjoy keeping up with the news in the sports world as well. ;)

@kehkou nice! When you are done and if you want it, you can share your series, I'll try to get them featured.

Good luck with Jeopardy @Tigroid, hope you can make it! Gotham is awesome, I'm catching up too before season 2 catches me up!

@Kelton2 participating in the comment section is a start! Good job getting out of your routine!

Sweet stuff @New_Newbie! When you get your game done, let us know! Would love to try it out! And oh, you are most welcome, I make it a must to read all of the commets I receive :)

Interesting hobby you got there @HaloEffect17! As for P.A Works, I've never tried any of their anime. Any good recommendations?

Can we make this like our anthem @Red3agle?

my interests are different than what I really do.
I can be interested in a lot of things, but that doesn't mean I'm doing it actively (like learning new things, sciences, space, etc.)

what I really do is :
I'm always glued to my screen, looking at GBAtemp, watching TV and playing video games. (or sleeping and working. I still spend time outside due to work obligation!)

What are your interests? What are your favorite activities?
reading console hacking progress, learning new things, video games, watching TV shows and anime.

Which other websites you browse and what for?
gbatemp, pogdesign/cat (for my TV show calendar needs), backloggery (for my personal game record needs), and anidb for my weabo needs.
yeah, that's the only one, no time to go elsewhere.
or maybe amazon (to buy games/books), wikipedia (to learn and help others), wikia.
cpp, googlecode and github websites to develop homebrew.
oh, and youtube sometime.

What TV shows you watch?
Depends which years. as series are often canceled.
it can be either bad show nobody likes or good show everyone watches.

completed or ended this year : Extant, dark matter, under the dome, daredevil, humans, the whispers, Orphan black, ascension, falling skies, messengers, the returns, between,

current : Once upon a time, Minority report, blindspot, Fear the walking dead/walking dead, greys, scandal, murder, heroes reborn,
to come : marvel jessica jones, agent of shield, carter, izombie, arrow, flash, game of throne, the 100, the librarian, 12 monkeys, supergirl, Xfiles s10, revenge (2 season difference from usa in France), evildead

to catch up: continuum, vampire diaries, defiance, maybe Mr robot, TBBT.
to try : The Man in the High Castle, the badlands.

that seems a lot, but they are not broadcasted at the same time, so it's not a lot.

Anime : too much to list, so make yourself at home http://anidb.net/ my list.
it's missing last watched, which were Ore monogatari, Witch academia 2.
waiting for Attack on titan 2, natsume (whatever number or season it will be), anime mirai (4 new student project every years), and any random movies nobody care but which happen to be great.

Movies : I don't watch a lot.
last seen : Ex Machina.

Which music you listen to ?
game and anime OST
few movies or series OST
OST only
did I mention ... yeah you understood.

Which games I like?
I can play anything, except sports games.
but I rarely play now, I miss time to do all I want.
I have preferences for adventure games (Zelda/metroidvania) or JRPG or real time action (tomb raider/Kingdom Heart/Uncharted/) or little games like Journey, Ico, Rime, etc.
but really, it just depend my mood, the available games, and more importantly, my free time compared to my backlog.

I try to play one game at a time now, instead of starting 10 and complete 0.
It's working ! I manage to complete 10-15 game per years.

Currently playing : Labyrinth no Kanata, on 3DS. this will be my 9th game this year.
That's the only game I play now. One at a time.
Next game will probably be NDS's Radiant Historia.
edit from 2016: I completed it last year.

I have lot of games I started and I need to complete (mass effect, Star ocean 4 completed in 2016) and lot of games I bought and never even started (ni no kuni, pikmin 3)
Pleaaaase, give me time.

note: completed game list in my signature.

Where's my time?
I spend my time ...
1. working, 9h
2. sleeping 7h
3. free time (spend reading gbatemp) 4-5h
3. house stuff, (eating, washing, cleaning) remaining time
repeat each days, every months

Which youtube I subscribed ?
not much.
Taylor Davis, for violin music.
Malukah, cause I like her voice
Austin Wintory, because he is a great composer for releasing a full Journey game soundtrack for free on his channel, with commentary to explain every movements.
and because he noticed both Taylor and Malukah, and now work with them on his new video game musics!

Social media I use :
none, except if GBAtemp can be called social.
I don't facebook, google+, tweeter, youtube (only watch, never post), miiverse, or any other social websites.

Few reasons :
1- doesn't interest me
2- don't like spreading my life on public, to everyone, I prefer keeping it private
3- I'm a geek weaboo nerd stuck in front his screen, without friend, no social life so no need of social websites.

Who am I then ?
Of course, it only describe me shortly.
You can't know me only with this very few things I listed.
I do more things, which I probably forgot to write or even think of right now.

For more information, there's the other thread :

Oops @FAST6191...
Would love to see your metal works!:yay: Any pictures?

I don't really know what I have that I can show you (maybe not quite trade secrets but similar), what will be all that impressive if you are not a machinist or otherwise engineering inclined, and what I am actually responsible for* beyond the reverse engineering/failure analysis or coating/surface treatment suggestions as far as the interesting aspects of something might go. Equally a lot of it is often more "I could do this but then I would not be doing what earns me money, you weld this simple box to hold the battery and run the new loom, especially as you are the one that probably pulled it apart and documented it in the first place".

*I usually phrase it along the lines of if your machinist gets hit by a bus there are considerably worse people to know than me, however put me on piece work and it is beans on toast without the beans before the month is out. Not to mention running my own competitive machine shop is a far harder game than I want to play in this part of the world -- hardly anybody being trained in it so no apprentices or journeymen, no machine/part/consumables suppliers (I snap a decent milling bit here and was stupid enough, or it would have eaten my profits to less than manageable, to not have spares but otherwise have a deadline there is no phoning up my mate the next industrial park over and getting something sorted, https://www.machinemart.co.uk/ is around here and is about as good as it gets), no material suppliers really worth speaking of ("What is this metal grade you speak of?"...)... so I would pretty much have to do top to bottom vertical integration I believe they call it, elsewhere in the UK it is not as bad (still far from good) but you can still make it work and the day jobs/keep the lights on stuff nobody cares if they have to stick it on a lorry either way. With that in mind I farm a lot of the fun stuff out.

I will have a think and a look around and see what I can show.

to catch up: vampire diaries

I never thought I'd get on with that show. Some teen drama bullcrap, and hip vampires, pass. But then my youngest sister binge watched it on Netflix in 2013, and would make me watch with her. As it turns out, it's not a bad show at all. I haven't seen it since then, but I thought it was a pretty good show. Certainly better than Twilight.

Cartoons (yes, I still watch cartoons)

I don't watch TV, but on the rare times I spot some playing from my little sister, I find I still love cartoons. Spongebob Squarepants, apparently gets the "overrated" tagline and that it stopped being funny after the first few seasons. I don't really agree, I can binge watch that show if I wanted to. Looney Tunes is just timeless, and I can go on Youtube and find one to enjoy. Old Nick and Cartoon Network shows still rock for me. I haven't gotten on with newer shows, my regular TV viewing stopped right when Adventure Time debuted and everyone in high school talked about that show. I don't know how I'd get on with that, Uncle Grandpa, Regular Show, these cartoons that seem to exist only as speed for kids. Frantic moving, completely random, all that. They look different than the ones in the past I mean. Definitely different.

I'm 22, I can still watch cartoons. I haven't watched an animated movie this year other than the 2 Heavy Metal movies. Those are adult ones, so family animations, I am not interested really. Not now at least. I haven't been for years too, I think the last one I saw in full was Shark Tale. So Pixar movies like Up and Wall-E, never saw. Toy Story 3, never saw. And Shark Tale had Will Smith, and at that time, I tried to watch everything the man did. Now I've fallen off that. There are some early films I still haven't seen, but mainly movies in the 2010s that he did, other than some of MIB 3, none of those I saw. I really don't want to watch After Earth or Winter's Tale. Oh wait, Anchorman 2. There, that's only 2 Will Smith films that I saw released in this decade.

Most of the films I watch are R rated, but sometimes a PG or PG-13 film can entertain me. Most recently, Battle Beyond The Stars, amazing B-film, perfect alternative to Star Wars. Only G film I saw this year was The Straight Story, and only because David Lynch directed it. I can't wait for Twin Peaks to return.

Those are my main interests. And I like them all in a really broad way (for example, I like well build, fun, and interesting music... ..and not only a specific style, like hard rock)
