I personally have a 1st day wii with a wiikey in it, got it last year. it seems to run fine and smoothly compared to some I've heard. what are the best?

Depends on the drive chipset...
Wiikey or YAOSM seem to be the way to go on DMS/D2A/D2B(without cut legs).
D2CKey is good for original D2C - though it takes a lot of soldering, or a clip.
D2Pro or Wasabi for Cut Leg D2B/D2C/D2C2/D2E
