Earlier tonight, I was able to un-YLOD a ps3 phat which I got for free. I'm curious as to what I can do with it.

Its current firmware is 4.71, it is the very first model (CECHA). I know that CFW requires a firmware of 3.5, but looking around, I was given the impression that early phats/slims are downgradeable? If anyone has some info for me, it'd be much appreciated.

technically, the PS3 isn't bricked. you just fixed the YLOD. the term "bricked" usually refers to a broken flash storage that has the device's core operating system, which usually is a NAND or a NOR.

but hey, grats! CECHA is backwards compatible right? and yes, that is downgradeable, but you'd require some hardcore soldering for that model.

They are downgradable, BUT you need a hardware flasher. :-/

Also; the CECHA has nand flash memory and is a real hassle to dump and flash.

How'd you fix it? Cause it could break again. I fixed a YLOD a while back and immediately sold it to GameStop. Got over $100 for it, which was nice, and I bought a PS3 slim with the money.

You need to downgrade to 3.55 if you wanna install cfw. There is no software solution for that and there are two types of phat ps3's. Ones that use nor and ones that use nand. You have a nand, which is a bigger pain to downgrade. I have only downgraded nor ps3's so I'm not familiar with the nand downgrade process, but I'm sure it's worth it. CFW ps3's are freaking awesome. They run emulators, can be used as media centers, there's homebrew, they play psp games perfectly, you can copy your games right onto it just by inserting the disc and tons of more stuff.

Had a look at the downgrade process. Most of the stuff in there (eg soldering) is far beyond my abilities. Is there anyone out there who does it as a service?

A more common method that will work is the halo 360 Nand clips with a progskeet board. That is atleast a solderless solution. You will need 2 nand clips and assemble the flasher. Then dump nand 0 and nand 1 weave them verify, patch then flash.
