It's from a movie I downloaded months ago from a public tracker. I wasn't a member of private trackers at the time, but now i am, so I shouldn't have any problems anymore. I've tried to explain this to my parents but they will not fucking listen. They're convinced that the ISP will fine us if they catch us and they won't listen when I try to tell them that private trackers are safe.

My ISP is mediacom.

if you belong to a private tracker now then whats the big deal. keep downloading. your parents will never know if letters aren't being sent.

How does on join a private tracker?

That's why I use my next door neighbour's poorly protected wireless broadband. That way if my downloading becomes an issue it's her that gets in the shit, not me. To be fair, she deserves it. She's a total bitch whose idea of child care it to punch the child in the face until he understands.

Just because you download off of other peoples' networks doesn't make you entirely safe, and if you get caught you'd get yourself in a bigger hole then if you did it on your own network.
Exactly, I forget what it's called but it's just like stealing someones internet but making them pay the bill and take the risk if you download something illegally, wait, it's not LIKE, it IS.

They can legally do it.

QUOTE(Julian Sidewind @ Jan 11 2011, 06:16 PM) I got a letter like that years ago at home. I stopped torrenting.

Megaupload ftw. Oh and living away from home so the internet stuff is the landlord's problem.
Yeah, I've stayed away from torrents after I got a letter. Also I'm living at college, so not really my problem. Though I could get in just as much trouble I suppose.

Never been caught and almost everything that I illegally download apart from anime is torrented, suppose they pay more attention to U.S users compared to AUS users. And no, no Peer Guardian or anything.

My mom got a letter a few months back with the same thing. She told me to stop downloading. I told her I would but I didn't. She kinda knows I still do. I'm just more careful nowadays.

If you're still too nervous to go back to torrents then stick to direct downloads.

You should be fine, I just looked over your companies policies and it states that the letter was sent pretty much to cover their own hide. They basically sent you the letter to inform you that you'd be in deep shit if the people who own the material you downloaded decide to take action, and they won't be liable if they do so. Often times you can ignore it, but you may be one of the unlucky few that gets picked out of the bunch. You really shouldn't worry though, they mostly go for uploaders.

Could you link me to the page that said that? Maybe if my parents saw it they'd let me download from private trackers.

Thanks. i'll show them this and hope they don't get pissed off. They probably will but it's worth a try.

Also it doesn't change that the letter says they'll shut down our internet if they get another complaint, which is what my parents were really concerned about.

I got warned by my uni after downloading just one torrent on their network, they basically threatened to kick me out if it happened again so anyone using a college/university computer under their own username be very careful. Btw I never understood the threat of closing down your internet, what if you just go to another isp?

I was thinking about starting to torrent at my community college's computer lab. The only problem is that I would have to sign with my username. I've done it before and no one's told me anything, but if I switched to that I'd have to do it way more.

Maybe I could just only do it when I get one someone's computer who forgot to log out. That happens surprisingly a lot.

There's tons of ways you can hide what your downloading. Also, did you see the letter yourself?

It's not that hard. Hell, if you have a kid who's watching porn or something, but you can't prove it because they delete cookies and history and crap and you're not that tech smart, you can call your ISP for a list of sites that you've browsed from the past week, past month or anything.

Well they won't get complaints if you download from a private tracker, most companies always use that threat. It's mostly just a front, but you should still be cautious about what you download.

Tried to explain that to my parents but they will not hear it.

Yes, I saw it.
