Softmodding is a lot of messing around converting the games to play from memory card. It is also easily deleted by Nintendo. All they have to do is to update the main board firmware. Modchips can get round this by updating via DVD.
I think if you are into playing a lot of games a modchip is your best option.
There are no security stickers on Wii consoles, so there is no reason why the chip cant be removed and the unit replaced under warranty.
