Is there an easy way to create a translation patch for a Japanese physical Switch game that already has an English release localisation, but digitally only? I have 2 Japanese imported Switch games that are not multilanguage: Hatsune Miku: Project DIVA Mega39s (Mega Mix) and the 2 in 1 Famicom Detective Club card that was part of the Collector's Edition. I was wondering if it was possible to create mods for people with a hacked Switch that would use translation of the digital English versions of these games to translate the physical cards in real time.

And before anyone else says it, yes, I know, I can buy or “download” those games and install them on my Switch. Hell, I already purchased the English Project DIVA game, but I wanted to know if I could go by with just my physical cards.

Cheers

If the structure of the game files are identically you may be able to override certain required files using LayeredFS but past that it isnt exactly a simple process.

That's a bit above my paygrade. Know anyone who do these things on commission?

It might be really easy. Figure out which files contain the text (and voices if applicable) by their filenames and replace them with the English ones. It will either work, or text might look corrupted.
Keep in mind, you won't be able to share the mod itself anywhere that doesn't allow warez.

Well I'll be, I'll give it a try tomorrow, cheers mate!
forgot to mention I’ve used this ips patch myself in the past and it does work to unlock the 2 cut song and to remove the watermark during PV. but the english patch function itself I never tried it.

If it was that easy, I could create an IPS patch using Flips (which would be legal :P ).
yeah, that's not how that works lol. it's not suddenly legal just because the copyrighted content has a different file extension

for your own use is fine, but then if it's just for your own use and not for sharing, legality doesnt matter

Well a lot of retro games had major differences between the Japanese and English versions such as difficulty. I guess then Romhacking.net most be hosting a lot of "illegal" IPS files because most of these just rip the English text from the English version in order to patch the Japanese version.

if it's just text then it might be a bit more of a gray area, but if you were taking all the assets and making them available for download, that's a bit iffy legally speaking. especially if there is exclusive content between both versions of the game that wasnt in your original copy

of course, if the platform that hosts the files doesn't mind, and the company that owns the rights doesnt care and never takes it down, then nothing will happen, but it doesnt stop being copyrighted content. a lot of people think "it's ok because it's a patch" as if it stops being copyrighted content just because they share it in a patch file instead of a playable rom

then you have some other cases like pokemon brilliant diamond and shining pearl where you could change your game to the other one by changing just a few bytes in the executable. you didnt need to share or download the assets, and the few bytes by themselves werent really copyrighted code, but that patch was never allowed on rom hack sites because it's so close to being piracy anyway, even though it technically isnt

The game Contra Hard Corps for example was released in a harder difficulty in the west to prevent people from finishing in a weekend's rental. Contra Hard Corps in Japan gave you 3 hit points before you died while in the west, it was only 1 hit and you died. Bringing the English text of the western version to the Japanese version doesn't bring anything new to the table in terms of assets.

If you agree to that last statement then tell me, how does bringing the English text of the western versions of the Famicom Detective Club games to the Japanese versions differs from that said previous statement?

I'm not really sure what you're trying to argue here or why famicom detective club is relevant (or why you think that refutes anything.) in the end copyrighted content is copyrighted content, it doesnt matter which file format it's being shared in

the rights owners not caring enough to spend legal resources taking it down is a different matter, and romhacking.net does not define the law so just because they allow people to upload things like that it doesn't mean it's legal

I sure do wonder why the english files need to be shared over a mediafire link though... it's legal content to share after all, isn't it? just upload it to a rom hack website and be done with it

I don't care about copyright, if I did, I wouldn't have a 2 TB drive SSD for ROMs and ISOs. If I buy something, it's because I want it for my collection, not because it's the right thing to do. I'm simply going through this discussion with you because it amuses me and because I'm trying to find out where you draw the line.

Can't figure for the life of me how to get this working. I placed the ipswitch.nro file and the ipswitch folder into the into Switch folder. I placed the 0100F3100DA46000 folder into the contents folder. When I run the ipswitch app, hit the A button, it just says: Error, list is empty

Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

on the github go to the mega39 folder, then put one of the pchtxt file (depending on your game version) into /switch/ipswitch/megamix/

then inside the ipswitch app, choose “toggle patch text content” then load the pchtxt file above. then from the list just enable whatever setting you want. finally press Y to “save and apply changes to ips”, after that the app will generate a .ips file into the exefs_patches folder.

I recommend test something simple first like removing watermark from the pv to see if it works

Ah, I was missing a subfolder in the ipswitch folder. I just put the pchtxt in the ipswitch directory, that why it wasn't finding anything. Mind you, that's how it was structured in the package I downloaded. Everything is working fine now, easy app to use. Before I spend on a 5000 Yen Nintendo card from Play-Asia, do you know if the additional songs from the season passes will get translated as well?

Cheers

nice, glad everything seems to work just fine 👍👍👍

for the translation of the dlc songs, I don’t know either. I’ve said it before that I never use the english translation function since I don’t need it back then.

nowadays I’m playing the superior pc version where you can use mods, for example a black rock shooter module

I would re-purchase every SEGA game I own on the Switch on Steam.... if they would remove that #$%& Denuvo DRM in their games.

EDIT: I took a chance an it paid off. I see all 251 songs with their English descriptions.
