I'm thinking of buying a cheap 2nd hand DSi XL from eBay mainly to run the DSi version of Gameyob. :) Is there anyway to still hack the console to put homebrew on it? Every search ends up saying it's not possible unless the console already has Flipnote or the console is hard-modded. Could Flipnote be redownloaded to a console that previously had the software (presuming it's now been erased). Where can I find a tutorial on hard-modding to get homebrew working? The best I've found is a picture of what contacts on the PCB to solder.

Yup! The DSi recieved a new exploit for all regions naed “Lennyface”, as well as CFW. You will need to make sure Flipnote Studio is on the console. That way you can install Unlaunch without a hardmod.

Edit: You can still redownload Flipnote Studio if the previous owner didn’t delete his Shop Account. Otherwise, hardmod.

Thanks for your reply.

I've no idea if I'll be able to get a DSi XL with Flipnote or not so am looking at doing a hardmod. I found this thread https://gbatemp.net/threads/dsi-downgrading-the-complete-guide.393682/ about hardmodding a DSi but in the list of requirements it says you need "an exploitable DSiWare game from the DSi Store". If I had that I wouldn't be looking to do a hard mod! So it's a bit of a catch-22. :(

You know you can still use up-to-date flashcarts like the R4 3DS Gold Plus, right? Older flashcarts are blocked on the latest version of the firmware.

There's a new exploit in the works called FailZone, that is based on a system title so every DSi has it.

Yeah, got all of a sudden announced yesterday. It uses DSLink and it can load Unlaunch over wifi. This not only kills off hardmodding, but also makes every DSi exploitable without needing special tools.

But can they run in TWL-mode? Can they run TWL-based homebrew like TWiLight++? Nope.
Well, the goal in this case was to run Gameyob, which I understood to not be "TWL-based".

Is there any homebrew explicitly written for the DSi yet, aside from TWiLight++?

Almost all DS homebrew will work with twilight++, and there are some other applications. You can get a title manager and a slot 1 save injector/extractor.

You would still need an appropriate wifi card and software to create a Zone and so make the app visible on the majority of consoles that don't have it already unlocked, I guess...

Goal is to run the DSi version of Gameyob, which I understand runs better than both the DS and 3DS versions.

I see. In that case I suppose a flashcart won't do. But I would expect a modded 3DS wouldn't have any problems running the DSi version of anything.

Is there some specific reason why someone would never be able to write homebrew that uses DSi mode that runs from a flashcart, or is it just that no one cares to work out the details? I mean, there were definitely cartridge games that used DSi-exclusive features – or were those games limited strictly to using the camera, and incapable of using the faster CPU speeds?

as far as i know, flashcart boot in NTR mode, which is just DS. So the system thinks its just a DS game and wont let it access any other features. I think that in order to boot in TWL mode you need to have some sort of exploit.

Even if it were running off Face Training or another DSi only cart, it would be useless because slot 1 games can't access sd or nand.

Tbh just get a 3ds no offense but the 3ds can play every game the DSi can plus 3ds games it's not like it still has the gba slot they're cheap anyways you can get the 2ds xl which I recommend if your on a budget for 150$ don't get the 2ds really as that's for little kids I mean I used to have a 2ds but that's before the new 3dses came out but I recommend for about everybody to skip to the new 3ds xl it has better build quality plus 3d
If you can get gameyob as a CIA then you can run it I just read your post now

That depends on the permissions enabled in the game's header - while no commercial DSi physical games exist with SD/MMC enabled, developer ones do, some DSiWares can theoretically in fact run from slot-1 (they may or may not be exploitable, though), and CFW console can override permissions :)

No offence taken but I'm looking to get a DSi XL due to the larger screen size but same resolution as the DS which means a 1:1 display of Gameyob will be larger than a DS or 2/3DS with their increased resolution. Not to mention the fact that a second hand 3DS XL sells for at least 5 times the price of a DSi XL.

Where can I keep abreast of the FailZone progress? This thread is the only place I've seen anything about it.
