I've heard a lot of people say it's bad and I want your take on it.

What do you think? I think it depends on if it's good or not, but's that's my opinion.

I'd say it is simply because it's generally made by 14 years old girls who like to fuck a good franchise up.

I'd say it depends on the piece. Some fan-fiction is written with the soul purpose of having it become a sexual romp for the main character. While others, though rare, actually use the characters for a plausible, near-canon story experience.

Fan fiction seems mostly bad, but I once accidentally stumbled upon a Rurouni Kenshin fan-fic that was actually pretty good. I don't make a habit of reading fan-fics, but my opinion of them definitely changed with that one. The characters actually acted the way I'd expect them to act, and the plot wasn't copying anything from the series. Oh, and it also didn't turn into a porno.

I therefore voted maybe.

Well, i vote yes. Because it is good to see a different point of view from a person that probably love the fiction. Sometimes it sucks, but sometimes they do a great work.
You do realize that by voting yes in this poll you're saying fan fiction is bad, right?

QUOTE(JinTrigger @ Feb 13 2011, 02:52 AM) Im saying no because im sick of yaoi fan fic or anime characters (esp. naruto and sasuke)
And you do realize that by voting no in this poll you're saying fan fiction isn't bad, right?

I guess the two canceled each other out?

Some fanfic writers are good writers, but people almost never realistically portray somethings story/characters/world/etc properly and thus I know i'm reading some crappy fanfic for something I like.

I've never liked any fan fic i've ever read so *shrugs*.

Sturgeon's law: 90% of everything is crap. Therefore, 90% of fan fiction is crap. But the remaining 10% isn't crap, and some of it is genuinely good. So no, fan fiction isn't inherently bad, but if you pick a fic at random odds are high it will be crap, and that might give you the impression that all fanfics are crap.

But look at it this way. All those franchise "expanded universe" novels out there? The Star Wars, Star Trek, Dragonlance, Warhammer, etc. etc.? They're all actually fanfics.

Then perhaps we can take it a step further and say all Anime fillers are fanfics.

Despite being someone who spends a great deal of time fiddling with things attempting to make them better I am not a great lover of fan fiction unless it finds itself in the absurd, parody or satire side of things.
A thought at this point though- how much different, if at all, is it for matters of altering games versus say altering a book or film (assuming no book to reference from or DVD extras/directors cuts/extended episodes to play with) and why might that be (different medium in general, one with variation of things inherent to the medium or that game stories are somewhat weak* most of the time compared to some of the top quality stuff in the more established mediums to name but three possible things to explore).

*no qualifier- I genuinely think this.

This being said many of the big franchises (more the longer running ones) or indeed depending on how much you want to look into the works of Joseph Campbell often wander into fan fiction circles (most of the STV comic cartoons these last few years, the retconning, inside jokes, pandering and appeals to the fans as it were).

One thing I will throw in there as I have not seen it mentioned yet- ghostwriting. Where does that sit?
